MBB: Tanksley's 23 Points Not Enough In Loss To La Salle

Hempstead, NY – Junior Ameen Tanksley scored 23 points, his team-leading fourth 20-point game of the season, and classmate Juan'ya Green had 15 points and a career-high tying 11 assists but it wasn't enough in a 83-74 loss to La Salle Tuesday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra fell to 7-4 with its second straight loss. La Salle upped its record to 7-5 with its second straight win.

The Explorers jumped out to a 13-8 lead five minutes into the game behind eight points from Jordan Price. The Pride would pull within four on several occasions, the last at 31-27, with 7:07 to play on a jumper from Tanksley. La Salle would then go on a 7-0 run to take its largest lead, 38-27, with 5:35 to go on a Price jumper. Hofstra would cut the deficit to six, 40-34, with just over a minute remaining but would trail at the half, 44-36. Tanksley led the Pride with 11 points in the opening 20 minutes, while Price led all scorers with 17.

The teams traded baskets to start the second half before the Pride went on a 9-0 run to pull within one, 50-49, with 16:30 to play. Tanksley had two three-pointers in the run. The Explorers would score six straight points to go back up by seven, 56-49, with 14:44 to go. Green converted a three-point play to pull the Pride within four before Cleon Roberts hit a three on the other end to put the Explorers back up by seven, 59-52, with 12:52 to play.

La Salle went back up by 11, 63-52, on an Amar Stukes layup with 10:55 remaining. Hofstra pulled within six, 68-62, following a 6-0 run. Moussa Kone started the run with a pair of free throws, while Malik Nichols and Green each added buckets in the spurt.

But the Explorers would use a 5-0 outburst to go back up by double-digits, 73-62. Roberts would hit a pair of free throws and Price followed with his fourth three-pointer of the game. The La Salle lead would grow to 17, 81-64, with 3:15 to play. After the Explorers took an 83-66 lead, the Pride closed the game on an 8-0 run to account for the final score.

Price led all scorers with 28 points and also added seven assists. Roberts chipped in with 18 points. Jerrell Wright had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Steve Zack had eight points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Explorers. La Salle held a decided advantage in points in the paint, outscoring the Pride, 44-28.

Nichols had nine points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Pride.

The game saw Hofstra Coach Joe Mihalich face his alma mater for the third time in his coaching career. The 1978 graduate is now 1-2 in his coaching career against La Salle.
