Baltimore, MD – Junior guard
Juan'ya Green had 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to a dominating 105-64 victory over Coppin State on Wednesday evening at the Physical Education Complex Arena. It was Green's second-double of the season and the rebound total marked a new career-high.
With the win, Hofstra improves to 7-2 this season and has now won four straight games. Coppin State falls to 1-8.
Junior forward
Malik Nichols continued his strong play as he followed up his double-double against Appalachian State on Sunday with another double-double as he totaled a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with his 10 points.
Hofstra was led in scoring by junior forward
Ameen Tanksley with 23 points. Sophomore guard
Brian Bernardi added 20 points. Both Tanksley and Bernardi each pulled down five rebounds as well.
Hofstra eclipsed the 100-point plateau in a regulation game vs. a Division I opponent for the first time since February 29, 1992 when the Pride defeated UMBC, 103-87.
The total points by the Pride are the most since December 1, 1984 when Hofstra defeated Virginia Wesleyan, 105-74. It is the most points in the program's Division I era.
Hofstra's 7-2 record is the program's best since the 2008-09 squad also began the year 7-2. The last time Hofstra began a season with a mark better than 7-2 was during the 2004-05 campaign when the Pride won its first nine games of the season.
The current four-game win streak by the Pride is the longest since February 5-15, 2011 when Hofstra also put together a four-game win streak. The last win streak longer than four games was a seven-game streak from February 10 – March 5, 2010.
The game marked the return to Maryland for three members of the Pride program as sophomore guard
Daryl Fowlkes hails from Fort Washington, MD, sophomore guard
Jamall Robinson is a native of Cheltenham, MD and freshman center
Andre Walker is from Clarksburg, MD.
Hofstra would have its second-highest scoring first half of the season as the Pride raced out to a commanding 48-26 lead after 20 minutes. Green, who tallied 12 points and six rebounds in the opening stanza, lead a spirited first half effort on both ends of the court as the Pride's defense was just as impressive as the offense.
The Pride would hold a 19-11 lead with 14:07 left before intermission following a three-pointer from Sterling Smith of Coppin State before holding the Eagles without a field for over six minutes as Hofstra pushed its advantage to 17, 34-17, following a basket from freshman guard
Eliel Gonzalez. The run in total was a 15-6 spurt with Green accounting for four points during the run and Robinson adding three.
After the Eagles got the deficit back down to 14, 35-21, at the 6:35 mark of the first half, Hofstra would score six straight points to take their first 20-point lead of the game at 41-21 with just over four minutes left in the half.
Hofstra would push the lead to over 30 points just under five minutes into the second half when Bernardi drained a three-pointer with 15:31 left to play to make it 63-32 in favor of the Pride and the outcome would never be in doubt the rest of the way.
Sophomore guard
Jamall Robinson added a season-high 14 points to go along with his five rebounds and four assists.
Coppin State got 12 points from Smith and 11 points, six rebounds and five assists from Taariq Cephas.
