WBB: Western Kentucky Edges Hofstra To Claim Thanksgiving Tournament Title

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra outscored Western Kentucky, 32-24, in the second half to force overtime, but the Lady Toppers scored the first eight points of the extra session and held off a late Pride rally for a 70-65 win and the Hofstra Thanksgiving  Tournament title.

Hofstra (3-2) was led by 16 points from Asia Jackson and 15 points from Darius Faulk. Western Kentucky (5-2) received a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds points from tournament Most Outstanding Player Chastity Gooch.

Faulk and Elo Edeferioka (7 points, 11 rebounds) were named to the all-tournament team from the Pride. Alexis Govan (16 points) joined Gooch on the all-tournament team from the Lady Toppers.

Neither team could get untracked offensively in the opening minutes of the first half as Western Kentucky held a 9-5 lead with 8:11 elapsed in the contest. The Pride would use a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the contest, 10-9, with 10:28 to play. Edeferioka had a layup to make it 9-7 and Kelly Loftus followed with a three-pointer to put Hofstra on top.

The Pride would go up by three, 15-12, on a three-pointer from Jakelle King-Gilchrist (10 points) with 8:14 to play before the Lady Toppers went on a 7-0 run to take a 19-15 lead. Govan and Gooch had layups for Western Kentucky and Tashia Brown capped the run with a three-pointer with 7:03 remaining. The Lady Toppers would build the lead up to 10, 34-24, with 27 seconds to go in the half following a 7-0 run. Hofstra freshman Ashunae Durant hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to cut the Pride's deficit to eight, 34-26, at halftime.

Faulk would score six of Hofstra's first eight points in the second half as the Pride pulled within four, 38-34, with 15:20 to go. After WKU went back up by six, 40-34, the Pride made it a three-point game on a three-point play from King-Gilchrist with 14:14 to go.

A three-point play from Ivy Brown would put the Lady Toppers back up by six before Jackson would get the Pride within two, 43-41, with back-to-back baskets. After Western Kentucky went back up by five, 46-41, Hofstra responded with a 5-0 run capped by a Jackson three-pointer that tied the score at 46 with 10:41 to play.

The Pride would take their first lead, 50-48, since the 8:14 mark of the first half on a fast break layup from Faulk with, coincidently, 8:14 to play in the second. But the Lady Toppers responded with four straight points on jumpers from Brown and Gooch to retake the lead at 52-50 with 7:07 remaining in the game. WKU would extend to a 57-51 lead with 4:51 to play following a three-pointer from Micah Brown and a jumper from Govan.

A pair of free throws from Jackson got the Pride within four, 57-53, and Faulk followed with a driving layup to make it a 57-55 game with 2:08 to play. After Western Kentucky missed a three-pointer on the ensuing possession, Jackson went to the line with 1:36 to go and a chance to tie the score. The junior guard hit both to tie the score at 57. Faulk put the Pride ahead, 58-57, with a free throw with one minute to play.

Gooch would tie the score at 58 with a free throw with 53 seconds left. Hofstra would miss on its next possession, but the Lady Toppers turned the ball over with eight seconds left on what could have been the final possession of the game. But the Pride could not get a shot off before time expired.

Western Kentucky struck first in overtime, scoring the first eight points before Durant put the Pride on the board with a three-point play. Durant would connect on one more free throw 10.8 seconds left to make it a 68-62 deficit with the Pride. Hofstra would retain possession following the miss and Krystal Luciano drained a three to make it a 68-65 game with 5.7 second left. But Gooch would hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory for Western Kentucky.

In the consolation game of the Hofstra Thanksgiving Tournament Tulane (5-1) defeated Northern Iowa (1-4), 71-48, behind 12 points from Tierra Jones and 11 points and 1-0 rebounds from Kolby Morgan. Erin Dohnalek led Northern Iowa with 10 points.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday, December 2, at Albany. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
