WBB: Hofstra Tops UNI In OT Of Hofstra Thanksgiving Tournament

Hempstead, NY – Sophomore Elo Edeferioka and freshman Ashunae Durant recorded double-doubles to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 61-58 overtime victory over the Northern Iowa Panthers in the semifinals of the Hofstra Thanksgiving Tournament at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Friday evening. Hofstra improves to 3-2 on the season while the Panthers fall to 1-3.

The Pride advance to the tournament championship game at 4 p.m. on Saturday against the Lady Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky, a 69-64 winner over Tulane in the first semifinal Saturday afternoon.

Edeferioka tallied 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season and seventh of her career. Durant, who recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds, including seven offensive caroms, posted her first double-double. It was the first time two Pride players recorded double-doubles since Anma Onyeuku (13-10) and Edeferioka (10-10) turned the trick against Delaware on Feb. 27, 2014. Sophomore Krystal Luciano also tallied 14 points, including five in overtime, and grabbed seven boards for the Pride. Hofstra shot 36 (25-for-70) percent from the field including four-of-seven in overtime.

Northern Iowa was led by sophomore Madison Weekly with a game-high 21 points, including five-of-11 from the three-point line. Sophomore Stephanie Davison added 19 points. Junior Amber Sorenson pulled down a team-high seven boards for UNI, which shot 34 (21-for--62) percent from the field. Northern Iowa will face Tulane in the tournament consolation contest on Saturday at 2 p.m.

After regulation time ended the two teams tied at 49, the Pride scored the first four points on baskets by junior Darius Faulk and Durant. Northern Iowa sandwiched free throws by Davison and sophomore Erin Dohnalek around two by Hofstra's Durant, Luciano hit a jumper from the side to give the Pride a 57-52 lead. Davison brought the Panthers back to within two with a three-point play at the 1:56 mark before Luciano hit a three-pointer from the corner with 49 seconds remaining to boost the lead to 60-55. Weekly hit a three-pointer with 26 seconds left before Luciano missed two free throws to give the visitors a chance to tie or win.

After Weekly was called for traveling with five seconds remaining, Faulk was fouled and missed two free throws, grabbed her second miss and was fouled again. This time, she hit one of two with one second remaining. After a timeout, Northern Iowa's desperation shot from 45 feet fell short.

The Pride jumped on the ice-cold Panthers of Northern Iowa early, scoring 17 of the first 21 points to take a 13-point lead on sophomore Kelly Loftus' jumper at the 9:18 mark. Edeferioka tallied six points and Loftus added five of the Pride's first 17 points. But Dohnalek's three-pointer at the 7:44 mark ended the Panthers' 0-10 field goal drought and started a 10-2 run that brought them back to within five at 19-14 on a Weekly three-pointer with 4:03 to play in the half.

But Edeferioka started a 10-5 Hofstra spurt with a three-point play at the 3:31 mark and Luciano had five points in the run to hold a 29-19 lead at the intermission. Edeferioka tallied nine points and six boards in the first half while Luciano added seven for the Pride, who shot 39.4 (13-for-33) from the field in the period. Weekly tallied eight points for Northern Iowa, which shot just 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from the field during the first 20 minutes.

Northern Iowa opened the second half on a tear, going on a 13-2 run over the first 5:19 to take a 32-31 lead on a Weekly three-pointer at the 14:41 mark. Weekly had eight points in the run and Davison added three for the Panthers.  Hofstra responded with consecutive baskets from Edeferioka, junior Sydni Epps and Luciano to regain the lead at 37-32 at the 12:21 mark. But Northern Iowa answered with nine consecutive points, including four by Davison and three by Sorenson, to open up a 41-37 lead at the 8:46 mark.

Faulk brought the Pride back to within two with a jumper at the 7:16 mark before the Panthers scored the next six points to build a 47-39 advantage following a Weekly lay-up with 4:48 to play.

But Hofstra wasn't finished. Jackson's three-pointer started the Pride's 10-2 run that culminated with Edeferioka's jumper in the lane that tied the contest at 49-all with 24 seconds to play in regulation. After a Northern Iowa turnover with 4.5 second remaining, the Pride had a chance to win the contest but Jackson's jumper from the baseline missed sending the contest into overtime.

In the first game Friday afternoon, the Lady Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky handed the Green Wave of Tulane their first loss of the season with a 69-64 decision. WKU junior Micah Jones tallied 16 points and six assists and senior Alexis Govan added 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Hilltoppers (4-2). Jones was four-for-seven from the three-point arc. Senior Chastity Gooch also scored in double-figures with 10 points while grabbing seven rebounds.

The Green Wave (4-1) was led by freshman Kolby Morgan with a game-high 25 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Morgan was five-for-nine from the three-point line and added a game-high four steals. Senior Jamie Kaplan added 11 points and a game-high seven assists for the Green Wave.

Western Kentucky rallied from an early 11-point deficit to close to within three at halftime. With the score tied at 43 at the 10:35 mark of the second half, the Lady Hilltoppers went on an 18-8 run behind seven points from freshman Tashia Brown (9 points) and six from Brown to open up a 61-51 lead after a Gooch lay-up with 4:31 to play. Tulane closed to within three at 64-61 with 47 seconds to play after a lay-up by Tierra Jones. But WKU hit five of six free throws in the final 35 seconds to keep the Green Wave at bay.
