MBB: Nesmith's Late Jumper Lifts Hofstra Past Stony Brook

Hempstead, NY - Graduate guard Dion Nesmith's jumper from just outside the free throw line with 1.6 seconds to play gave Hofstra a 66-65 win over Stony Brook Friday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra improves to 2-1 on the season with the win, while Stony Brook falls to 1-2. The game marked the first between the two schools since December 10, 2008. Hofstra leads the all-time series 19-4.

The first half featured five tie scores and four lead changes. The Pride took their largest lead of the half at 16-10 following a jumper in the paint from freshman forward Rokas Gustys with 11:07 remaining. The Seawolves battled back and tied the score at 17 with 8:33 to play on Jameel Warney's layup. Warney would put Stony Brook up, 19-17, with another layup before Hofstra tied the score courtesy of a pair of free throws from junior Juan'ya Green. After Stony Brook took another two point lead, junior Ameen Tanksley tied the score at 21 with a driving layup and Green put the Pride up by two with a layup of his own. That would be Hofstra's last lead of the half as the Seawolves went on a 9-0 run to take a 30-23 lead with 1:09 to go Warney scored four points for Stony Brook in the run. Tanksley stopped the spurt with a basket with 50 seconds to play to make it a 30-25 game and neither team would score the rest of the way.

Hofstra came out of the gate in the second half with a 16-9 run to take a 41-39 lead with 14:03 to go on Nesmith's jumper. The Seawolves would quickly retake the lead on a three-pointer from Bryan Sekunda. Nesmith and Green would have back-to-back baskets to put the Pride back up, 45-42. Warney followed with four straight points of his own to put the Seawolves back up, 46-45, with just under 11 minutes remaining.

The teams would trade baskets for a stretch with neither team holding more than a two point edge until a 9-0 run gave the Seawolves a 59-52 lead with 5:55 to go. Kameron Mitchell had a three-pointer to put Stony Brook up by six and Rayshaun McGrew followed with an old-fashioned three-point play to cap the run.

Green snapped the Pride's scoreless drought with a layup, but Carson Puriefoy answered with a long jumper to keep Stony Brook up by seven. But Tanksley hit a three-pointer and following a Stony Brook turnover, sophomore Brian Bernardi hit a transition three-pointer and was fouled. He completed the four-point play and tied the score at 61 with 3:23 to go.

The Seawolves grabbed two offensive rebounds on their next possession before Puriefoy hit a jumper to put the Seawolves ahead, 63-61 with 1:49 remaining in the half. Green would hit one of two free throws with 1:09 to play and Stony Brook turned the ball over with 46 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Nesmith hit a layup to give Hofstra the 64-63 lead.

But after a timeout, Warney put Stony Brook back up by one, 65-64, with nine seconds to play to set up Nesmith's heroics.

Green led the pride with 22 points, while Nesmith finished with 18 points on 8-12 shooting. Tanksley joined the pair in double figures with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Gustys had five steals to go along with four points and four assists.

Warney led all scorers with 26 points, 14 above his average, and also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. McGrew was the only other Stony Brook player in double-figures, as he chipped in with 13 points.

After shooting 33 percent in the first half, Hofstra was on fire in the second. The Pride connected on 65 percent of its field goals in the second stanza (17-26).

The Seawolves also shot well, connecting on 58 percent in the second half and 53 percent for the game.
