MSOC: Memic Scores On Senior Night In Win Over Charleston

Hempstead, N.Y. – Forward Maid Memic made his Senior Night a memorable experience with the deciding 38th-minute goal in Hofstra's regular-season concluding 1-0 victory over the College of Charleston in rainy and cold conditions at Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.

Memic took control of a ball that was deflected by a CofC defender and beat goalkeeper Alex Young for his 10th goal of the season 37:09 into the game. That marked his 30th goal of his career, making him one of just five players in Hofstra history to reach that total.

Hofstra, which had already clinched a spot in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, went 3-1-1 to finish the regular season. Junior goalkeeper Patric Pray stopped the only on-target shot he faced as Hofstra improved to 10-5-3 and 5-2-1 in CAA play.

With 16 points, Hofstra is equal with UNCW atop the CAA standings as of Saturday night. The Seahawks own the tiebreaker over Hofstra. The only regular-season game remaining is Elon (14 points) at Delaware (13 points) on Sunday at 1 p.m. A tie in that game would make Hofstra the second seed and afford the Pride a bye into the semifinals.

Pray posted his seventh individual shutout this season and contributed to his eighth clean sheet for the Pride overall. Hofstra out-shot Charleston (2-11-3, 0-6-2), 18-7, and held the Cougars without a shot-on-goal in the second half. Pray lowered his goals-against-average to 0.89.

Freshman midfielder Mani Walcott assisted on Memic's goal for his first career point. Walcott has appeared in all 18 games this season.

Before the game, Memic was honored as the Pride's lone graduating senior. After a ceremony that featured his sister arriving from Norway, Memic posted a game-high six shots and tied his career high with his 10th goal. Memic reached that figure in 2013, when he finished second in the CAA in goals.

Elliott Firth, Daniel Grundei and Harri Hawkins all entered the game with four yellow cards each but none received a fifth caution that would have forced them to sit out the team's first postseason game. The threshold for accumulated yellow cards is extended to eight once the regular season concludes.

Sophomore midfielder Joseph Holland tallied three shots and freshman Danny Elliott posted four, including two on-goal attempts. Young made three saves for CofC to keep the Cougars in the game.

Should Hofstra earn a seed lower than second, the quarterfinal round is scheduled to take place on Nov. 8 with the third-and-fourth place teams hosting the sixth and fifth-place finishers, respectively.
