VB: Hofstra Extends Win Streak To Eight With Sweep Of Northeastern

Hempstead, NY – Senior outside hitter Kelsie Wills was her usual consistent self as she had a match-high 16 kills and added a team-best 16 digs in leading the Hofstra Volleyball team to a three-set sweep of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival Northeastern on Wednesday evening at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

Set scores were 25-23, 25-15 and 25-23 in favor of the Pride.

The win, Hofstra's eighth straight, improves the Pride's record to 17-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in conference play. Northeastern falls to 8-10 and 1-4 in league action.

The win streak is the longest since Hofstra opened the 2012 season with eight straight victories. In addition, the 17-2 record after 19 matches continues to be the program's second-best after that length, only bested by the 1988 squad that was 18-1 (finished 37-5). The Pride's last win streak longer than eight was a 12-match win streak from September 15 – October 27, 2006.

Sophomore setter Hannah Klemm added a match-high 37 assists and six digs to the Pride's efforts in the match.

Jamie Bredahl led Northeastern with 13 kills and added seven digs.

Both teams got off to hot starts offensively in the opening set as Hofstra hit at a .400 clip, while Northeastern followed closely behind with a .333 attack percentage. The Pride broke a late tie in the set as they scored the final two points of the stanza to take the early lead in the match.

The Pride would make quick work of the Huskies in the second stanza as Hofstra had little difficulty in rolling past Northeastern, 25-15. Hofstra's defense stepped up in the second set as they held Northeastern to a .030 hitting percentage. The all-around game of Wills was showcased throughout the first two sets as she had already compiled a double-double in the first two sets alone with 10 kills and 11 digs.

Similar to previous matches for the Pride, Hofstra got off to a slow start in the third set and trailed Northeastern, 20-15, before using a 6-1 run to even the score at 21. After falling behind again, Hofstra would finally take the lead for good at 23-22 and the Pride would get a kill from Wills on match point to extend the win streak.

Senior middle blocker Nuria Lopes da Silva contributed eight kills, a .538 attack percentage and three blocks in the match. Senior outside hitter Emily Burke and sophomore middle blocker Veronika Kostova each tallied seven kills.

Brigitte Burcescu added 12 kills for the Huskies.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday when it travels to Charleston for a 7 p.m. match. Hofstra and the Cougars are the only two remaining CAA schools with perfect conference records. Charleston has a 12-7 overall record and a 4-0 CAA mark.
