Hempstead, NY – Hofstra junior
Charlotte Loehr scored just 1:22 into the contest but William and Mary scored five unanswered goals to record a 5-3 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Pride at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon.
Hofstra, which saw their five-game winning streak come to an end Friday, slip to 12-6 overall and 3-2 in the CAA while William and Mary, which won their second consecutive contest, improves to 7-10 on the season and 4-1 in conference play. The Tribe secured a spot in next week's (Nov. 7-9) four-team, CAA Field Hockey Championship with the victory. It will be their 20th appearance in the Championship, equaling Old Dominion's conference mark.
Hofstra was led by senior captain
Jonel Boileau and freshman defender
Simca Schoen with a goal and an assist. Freshman goalie
Carys Swan faced 10 shots on goal and made five saves as she lost for just the fifth time in 17 decisions.
William and Mary had five different players score goals led by sophomore Maria Pastor, who also tallied an assist to go with her fourth goal of the season. Senior Emma Clifton added two assists for the Tribe and junior Meredith Savage needed to make just one save for her seventh win of the year.
Hofstra came out of the gates fast with Boileau feeding Loehr, who blasted a shot from near the top of the circle for a 1-0 lead just 84 seconds into the game. It was Loehr's 10th goal of the season.
But it was all William and Mary from that point as the Tribe scored four goals in the first half and added a fifth 13:31 into the second half for a commanding 5-1 advantage. Junior Pippin Sanders tied the contest at 1-1 with her eighth goal of the year, from Clifton, at the 8:44 mark. Freshman Emma MacLeod notched her fifth of the season at the 14:04 mark to give the Tribe the lead for good. Freshman Booter Ellis made it 3-1 just a little more than two minutes later with her first goal of her career from sophomore Mary Flick. Senior Brittany Hopkins gave the Tribe a three-goal cushion as halftime with her second of the year, on a great solo effort, just 3:04 before the intermission. William and Mary outshot Hofstra, 11-3 over the first 35 minutes.
Clifton helped boost the lead to 5-1 for the Tribe at the 48:29 mark of the game when she fed Pastor at the post for the deflection into the goal. It was Pastor's fourth goal of the season.
The Pride showed some late life in the final five minutes when
Simca Schoen picked up a rebound of a defensive save by Jesse Ebner and fired home her fourth goal of the season at the65:30 mark. Three minutes later, Schoen fed Boileau for her team-leading 16th goal of the year. The goal, her 48th of her career, also tied her for third place, with Jamie Knoblich (1994-97), on the Hofstra career goals chart.
Hofstra was outshot, 9-5 in the second half and 20-8 for the game. The Tribe also had a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Hofstra will need to defeat James Madison in Sunday's high-noon, Senior Day, regular season finale in Hempstead for a bid into the 2014 CAA Field Hockey Championship.
