WTEN: Bowen and Pestano Advance At NTC BJK Invite

Flushing, NY - The doubles team of Sarah Bowen and Carmen Pestano picked up a win during A Doubles and advanced to the quarterfinals during the first day of the 2014 USTA National Tennis Center Billie Jean King Invitational. The event is held at the National Tennis Center, home of the U.S. Open.

Bowen and Pestano defeated Emma Alderman and Maxene Weinberg of Connecticut, 8-3, in the round of 16 and will face Harvard's Nikki Kallenbeg and June Lee in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

In B Doubles, the team of Bianca Derrick and Louise Lopez fell to Jessica Birowski and Ekaterina Tugarinova of Texas-Arlington, 8-6 in the round of 16. Giulia Leone and Bianca Posa dropped an 8-1 decision to Shea Flanagan and Summer Walker of Connecticut in a round of 16 match as well.

Lopez dropped her round of 16 A Singles match to Alderman, 3-6, 3-6, and then lost a consolation bracket matchup to Sanne Louwers of LIU Brooklyn due to injury retirement.

Bowen opened B Singles play with a 3-6, 4-6 loss to Weinberg and then fell to Texas-Arlington's Agustina Serio, 2-6, 2-6 in the consolation round. Pestano lost a round of 16 matchup to Vareria Koussenkova of Charleston Southern, 4-6, 5-7, and then fell to top-seeded Ellen Jang-Milsten of Harvard in the consolation bracket.

Derrick, competing at C Singles, lost to Fordham's Bella Genkina, 0-6, 3-6 in the round of 16. She then lost to the flight's third seed, Shreva Pasricha of FDU, 0-6, 0-6.

Posa and Leone each competed at D Singles for the Pride. Posa opened with a 2-6, 0-6, loss to Carolina Sa of Fordham, while Leone dropped a 2-6, 1-6, decision to second-seeded Jessica Birowski of Texas-Arlington. Posa would fall to Chanel Bell of Charleston Southern, 1-6, 1-6, in the consolation bracket. Leone fell to Gabrela Srodowski, 4-6, 1-6, in the consolation round as well.
