Hempstead, NY – Senior outside hitter
Kelsie Wills had another outstanding performance as she compiled a match-high 19 kills and a .386 hitting percentage, but it wasn't enough as Santa Clara rallied after dropping the first set to defeat the Hofstra Volleyball team on Saturday evening in the final match of the Hofstra Asics Invitational.
Set scores were 21-25, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-19 in favor of Santa Clara. The win improves the Broncos record to a perfect 3-0 this season. Hofstra suffers its first defeat of the 2014 campaign and falls to 3-1 this season.
Sophomore middle blocker
Veronika Kostova notched 11 kills in the contest, while sophomore setter
Hannah Klemm totaled 45 assists for the Pride. Wills also added 10 digs to complete her strong effort with a double-double.
Hofstra got off to a great start in the contest as they earned a narrow four-point victory in the opening set, using 13 kills on 33 attempts to power their way to the victory.
It was a very competitive match throughout the opening stanza with Hofstra showcasing their ability to compete with the Broncos.
Santa Clara would come back to take a 2-1 lead in the match on the heels of some stellar offense in the second and third set. The Broncos hit over .500 in both stanzas, including a match-high .536 in the third set.
In the fourth set, Hofstra compiled 15 kills and committed only two attack errors but the balanced Broncos attack was enough to allow Santa Clara to escape with the four-set win.
Senior outside hitter
Emily Burke added nine kills and four blocks for the Pride, while senior middle blocker
Adama Aja chipped in with six kills and two blocks.
Taylor Milton had 10 kills, nine digs and three blocks for Santa Clara, while Sabrina Clayton led the way with 17 kills and added 10 digs.
Hofstra is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Stony Brook at 7 p.m. in the David S. Mack Physical Education Center. It will be the first meeting between the Long Island rivals since September 8, 2009.
