Tallahassee, Fla. - Florida State's Courtney Senas drove in eight runs
total as Hofstra dropped a pair of games to the Seminoles, 9-1 and 4-0, in the FSU
Invitational on Saturday at JoAnne Graf Field.
Florida State opened the first game with three straight
runs and scored three additional runs in both the fifth and sixth inning in the
first game of the second day of the FSU Invitational.
Senas hit a two-run shot
and paced FSU with five RBIs in the opener. The center fielder then went
2-for-4 with three RBIs in the nightcap. Hofstra (ranked 21st by the NFCA and
25th by ESPN) fell to 1-3 while Florida State (25th NFCA, 21 ESPN) improved to
7-1.
The Seminoles built a 3-0 lead and established breathing
room with a three-run fifth inning to capture the win in Hofstra's first game
of the afternoon.
Florida State pitcher Monica Perry pitched a
complete-game for the Seminoles, allowing just four hits while striking out
six.
Junior second baseman Tori Rocha cut into FSU's lead,
lining a RBI double in the fifth to account for Hofstra's offense. Perry
improved to 4-1. Senior pitcher Olivia Galati threw a complete game, striking out
five while being charged with nine runs and 11 hits in taking the loss.
In the third, Florida State sandwiched two singles around
a sacrifice bunt. Morgan Bullock stole second to put two runners in scoring
position and Tiffani Brown drove in the first run on a fielder's choice to open
the scoring.
Senas' sacrifice fly to left drove in Bullock one batter
later, though Galati escaped further damage with a strikeout. Celeste Gomez's leadoff home run to center in
the fourth extended Florida State's lead to 3-0, though Hofstra responded in
the bottom of the inning. Freshman Maggie Hawkins drew a two-out walk and
scored on Rocha's double to left-center.
Freshman Chloe Fitzgerald notched two hits for her first
career multi-hit game and senior D.J. Slugh registered Hofstra's other base hit
for the contest.
Florida State tacked on three runs in the fifth on Senas'
two-run home run to left. Brown, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored, lined a
RBI triple in the inning.
The Seminoles completed the six-inning win when Senas
ended the contest with a two-run double to right center.
In the rematch late in the afternoon, Brown led off the
bottom of the first with a single and Senas hit a RBI double to left to open
the scoring against Galati.
Gomez added a RBI double in the third and Florida State
scored twice more in the sixth to preserve the final margin.
Galati threw her third straight complete game, giving up
four runs while striking out three in six innings. The West Babylon, N.Y. native
is 1-2. FSU counterpart Lacey Waldrop pitched a complete-game four hitter,
striking out eight to move to 3-0. Hofstra
will conclude the tournament tomorrow with a single game.
