Hempstead, N.Y. - Freshman Maggie Hawkins drove in three runs while seniors Jess Hirschbuhl and Tessa Ziemba each scored two runs to lift Hofstra to a 6-4 victory over Arkansas in the final day of the Florida State Invitational on Sunday afternoon at JoAnne Graf Field.
Senior pitcher Olivia Galati threw her fourth complete game in three days, holding Arkansas to six hits while striking out four to improve to 2-2. Hofstra ended the tournament 2-3 with both victories coming against Arkansas. The Razorbacks fell to 8-4.
Hofstra opened the scoring thanks to the impact plays of two underclassmen. Freshman Caryn Bailey hit a one-out triple to ignite a three-run rally. Following a fly out, Ziemba reached on an error to score Bailey for the opening score.
Hirschbuhl then singled to put two runners on base, setting up Hawkins' two-run double down the left field line. Hofstra would score again against Arkansas pitcher Kimmy Beasley in the third. Sophomore Erin Trippi's sacrifice bunt scored Hirschbuhl for the 4-0 Hofstra edge.
Galati started the game with three scoreless innings before Arkansas came back to tie the score in the top of the fourth.
A fielding error, walk and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Jayme Gee drove in a run with a single to left and the Razorbacks cleared the bases on the play via a throwing error, giving Arkansas three runs on the play.
The Razorbacks tied the score on Stephanie Canfield's RBI groundout, though Galati escaped further damage  and left two on base with a strikeout.
Hofstra went ahead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Becca Bigler hit a one-out double and Ziemba reached on a fielding error to put runners on the corners. Hirschbuhl lofted a sacrifice fly to left to bring in the first run and Hawkins smashed a RBI double to center for the key insurance run and the 6-4 margin.
Galati made the lead stand up, retiring the first two batters. A walk and a stolen base put pinch runner Sierra Bronkey in scoring position at second base, though Galati ended the inning on a strikeout.
The game ended at the conclusion at the sixth when the contest reached the agreed-upon cutoff point of 2:30 p.m. Galati now has 91 career victories. Beasley fell to 2-2 on the season.
Hawkins and Bailey both had great starts to their collegiate career, accounting for eight of Hofstra's 17 RBIs in the five-game tournament. Hofstra entered the week ranked 21st by the NFCA and 25th by ESPN.Â
The Pride will next be in action next Friday in the Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. with games against Pacific and Illinois State. Â
