Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra posted its highest goal output in four years as Hofstra bested James Madison, 5-2, in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Wednesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Junior forward Maid Memic scored twice and sophomore Marius Flateboe and freshman Ignacio Gorrono added goals to help Hofstra improve to 7-4 and 2-1 in CAA play. Eric Schmidt and Tom Fouhy scored goals for JMU, but the Dukes still fell to 4-7-1 and 0-2.
Hofstra netted three scoring strikes in the opening half, including an own goal, as the Pride scored the most goals in a game since the Pride beat Delaware, 6-0, in 2009. The home goal total was also the highest since Hofstra defeated the Blue Hens 5-0 in 2005.
The offensive explosion marked the program's 400th all-time victory. The Pride also improved to 6-0 at home in 2013.
JMU goalkeeper Bill Groben made 10 saves but Hofstra built a 22-9 advantage in shot. Sophomore goalkeeper Patric Pray made two saves to secure the win.
Memic netted the game's first goal and the last, opening the scoring in the fifth minute by slamming home fellow co-captain Tyler Botte's centering feed. Eric Schmidt tied it in the 15th minute when he headed in Tim Whitebread's cross.
Hofstra took the lead again just 36 seconds later when the Pride benefitted from an opponent's first own goal of the season. Flateboe extended the lead with what proved to be the game-wnner when he put in a deflection past Groben at 35:06 for a 3-1 edge. JMU answered back almost a minute later when Fouhy scored off Adam Bastidas' pass at 36:09, cutting Hofstra's edge to 3-2 entering halftime.
Gorrono provided a key insurance goal in the 50th minute. Senior Chris Griebsch extended his CAA-leading assist total to six when he fed the freshman at the top of the six-yard box. Gorrono netted his third goal of the season and his first in seven games.
Rory Murphy gave Hofstra another freshman with a point when he assisted on Memic's second goal in the 70th minute. Memic blasted a head-on shot at the top of the box to beat Groben. That marked his second multi-goal game of the season and matched his two-goal game versus Monmouth on Sept. 22. Memic's eight goals are four more than the next closest teammate.
Hofstra will play the College of Charleston in a CAA road contest on Saturday at 7 p.m.
