MSOC: Pride Falls To Vermont

Hempstead, N.Y. - The Hofstra men's soccer team gave up three second-half goals to Vermont in falling, 4-1, in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Sophomore Maid Memic (Kozarac, Bosnia) scored his third goal of the season in the 85th minute for the Pride. But Hofstra lost for the second straight game in dropping to 4-2-1. Vermont's D.J. Edler scored two goals off the bench and Joe Losier added a goal and an assist as the Catamounts improved to 2-4-2 and 2-0-2 in the last four games.

Vermont opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when the Catamounts drew a foul inside the box to set up Losier's penalty-kick attempt at 32:01. Hofstra senior goalkeeper Adam Janowski (Coram, N.Y.) was whistled for the foul while making a diving attempt. Losier capitalized with a hard left-side shot for the opening goal.

Hofstra held the overall edge in shots, 18-12. But Vermont's transition game allowed the visitors to generate quality chances, which paid off with two goals in a near six-minute span late in the second half.

Losier set up what proved to be a critical second goal when he slotted a pass to Jonny Bonner near the top of the box. Bonner fired a shot from eight yards out for the 2-0 lead in the 74th minute.

In the 80th minute, Teddy Gula initiated an odd-man rush, racing up the right sideline to draw Janowski out of the crease. When the goalkeeper committed, Gula hit an open Edler with a crisp centering pass, allowing Vermont to score into the open net for the 3-0 advantage.

Edler and Gula came off the bench for Vermont as the Catamounts saw their reserves contribute five points on the evening.

Hofstra ended Conor Leland's shutout bid at 84:13 when Memic scored off junior Tyler Botte's pass (North Babylon, N.Y.). Memic tied Botte and junior Chris Griebsch for the team lead in goals with three.

But the Pride, hurt by Griebsch's absence due to injury, could not get any closer. Leland finished with five saves while Janowski ended his evening with four stops.

Edler registered a multi-goal game by scoring off his own rebound from point-blank range with 1:51 left in the contest. He now has three goals on the season.

Senior Mike Annarumma (Massapequa Park ,N.Y.) provided good energy for Hofstra and finished with a game-high six shots.  Senior Thomas Bekas (Bay Shore, N.Y.) tallied two shots while fellow senior Stephan Barea (Levittown, N.Y.) notched three shots to complement Annarumma and Memic's four total shots.

Hofstra will next be in action on Saturday against Boston University. Game time at Hofstra Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
