Hempstead, NY
- Hofstra University Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway today announced that Alison Adamski has been named director of tennis.
Adamski, who has been women's tennis coach since 2011, will now serve as the
head coach of both the women and men's tennis programs. She replaces Philip
Wayne, who resigned his position in order to pursue his teaching career.
Hathaway also announced that an assistant coaching position would be created to
aid Adamski in overseeing the program.
"I am happy to
announce that Alison Adamski will lead both our women's and men's tennis
programs," said Hathaway. "Alison is a highly competitive and talented coach
and I am confident that she will bring the same enthusiasm to our men's program
that she has brought to our women's program during her tenure."
Adamski is in
her third season as head women's tennis coach in 2012-13 after starting at
Hofstra in January 2011. During her tenure she has coached the now-graduated
Elena Ivanova to back-to-back All-Colonial Athletic Association accolades and
has seen her team earn Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic
honors.
Adamski came
to Hofstra after serving as an assistant at New Jersey Institute of Technology
in Newark, New Jersey, from August 2009 to August 2010 where she worked under
former Hofstra Coach Michael Sowter. Adamski worked with both the men and
women's tennis teams and was involved in all aspects of the program including
recruiting, match coaching, player development and scouting. She helped the men's
program improve from 11 wins to 18 wins in her one season. Adamski also oversaw
the academic progress of the teams and saw both programs earn ITA All-Academic
honors.
After leaving
NJIT in August 2010, Adamski has served as an instructor at the John McEnroe
Tennis Academy on Randall's Island where she helps youth players prepare for
competition in United States Tennis Association (USTA) Sectional and National
Tournaments. She has also served as a coach with the USTA Player Development
Program at the Billy Jean King Center in Flushing Meadows, New York, since June
2010. The program trains American junior players who are on track to becoming
professionals on tour. She has worked under National Coaches Tim Mayotte and
Lee Hurst in the past and currently works with Lead National Coach Jorge Toledo
and National Coach Jay Gooding, who recently guided Christina McHale to #45
world ranking.
Prior to
coaching at NJIT Adamski was an administrative fellow for compliance at the
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). She assisted the senior associate
commissioner with all aspects of the conference's compliance program and
oversaw the MAAC's National Letter of Intent program.
Adamski, a
native of Queens, New York, has also coached at the Hofstra Summer Sports Camp
and the St. John's Summer Tennis Camp.
A member of
the St. John's University tennis program from 2004 to 2008, Adamski was team
captain for two years and posted a 57-22 record in singles play during her
three playing seasons. Her best season came in 2005-06 when she compiled a 25-6
singles record. She started her collegiate career at Connecticut, where she was
19-18 in singles as a freshman. Adamski was also 41-12 in doubles play at St.
John's, competing at the #1 flight in all three seasons. She was part of two
Silver Ball-winning women's doubles teams at the USTA National Open during her
collegiate career.
A Big East
Academic All-Star and the 2007 team Most Valuable Player, Adamski holds a
bachelor's degree in sports management and a master's in sports
management/coaching leadership from St. John's.
Adamski still
plays competitively, winning a Bronze Ball in mixed doubles at the USTA
National Open last winter and a mixed doubles Eastern Regional Championship
this past summer as part of the US Open National Playoffs.
