Harrisonburg, Va. - Junior Olivia Galati threw a
complete-game shutout and drove in both runs via a two-run triple to lead
Hofstra to a 2-0 victory over James Madison University in the opener and junior
Tessa Ziemba hit a two-run homer for a 4-0 lead in the second game that was
suspended in the top of the sixth on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial
Park.
Hofstra extended its first-place lead in the Colonial
Athletic Association to 2 ½ games with the victory, improving to 27-13 and 12-0
in league play. JMU fell to 24-22 and 10-3. Lightning, followed by heavy rain, bombarded
the field with two outs in the top of the sixth of Game 2. That contest is set
to be concluded on Sunday at 11 a.m. followed by the scheduled third game of a
three-game set.
Galati (20-5) struck out 12 against just one walk in throwing
a four-hitter. The West Babylon, N.Y. native posted her 10th shutout and 23rd
complete game in winning her 18th straight start to move into sole possession of
second place for the team's longest streak. Galati notched her ninth game of
10-or-more strikeouts and her two RBIs accounted for the only offense.
In the second game, Galati did not allow a hit through five
innings, only walking one batter against eight strikeouts. Hofstra has won 25
of its last 27 games.
Ziemba tied JMU's Ashley Burnham for the CAA lead with her career-high 11th
home run in the opening inning, hitting an opposite-field home run to left for
a 2-0 lead in the opening inning of the second game.
Following the home run, JMU starter Sarah Mooney (8-9) kept
Hofstra off the scoreboard until the fifth when junior Becca Bigler hit a
leadoff double to right and Galati reached on a walk. Ziemba was hit by a pitch
to load the bases and freshman Erin Trippi lined a single to right. Second
baseman Caitlen Manning jumped and got the top of her glove on the ball but
couldn't prevent it from going to right for a RBI.
Senior Krista Thorn drew a bases loaded walk to score Galati
and chase Mooney with one out in the fifth and the Pride ahead, 4-0. Hofstra
has now out-scored CAA opponents, 104-21.
In Game 1, both teams exchanged zeros for the first two
innings with Galati and JMU freshman Heather Kiefer starting strong. Hofstra
mounted a two-out rally in the third. Junior Rachael Senatore used her speed to
beat out an infield single and Bigler lined a hard-hit single up the middle for
the first two Pride hits off Kiefer.
Facing an 0-1 count, Galati went the other way for a two-run
triple, loping a ball that landed just inside the right field line and skipped
into the corner as Senatore and Bigler came around to score for the 2-0 edge.
Kiefer fell to 10-5 despite allowing just four hits in the complete-game
effort.
Galati's two-run extra-base hit marked the first team she
reached 30 RBIs in her three-year career. She has more RBIs than earned runs
allowed this season (28 in 174
2/3 innings).
After staking Hofstra to the lead, Galati struck out the
side in order in the third as part of five-straight JMU strikeouts. The Dukes generated
a base runner in the fourth on Burnham's single through the right side before
Galati induced a fly out and a got a strike out.
A leadoff walk in the fifth and a sacrifice bunt allowed JMU
to put a runner in scoring position for the first time all game. Galati responded
by striking out Manning and Anna Klumpp to end the frame.
JMU mounted just one base runner in the final two innings.
Galati pitched a 1-2-3 seventh and an athletic defensive play by second baseman
Tori Rocha to make a running catch and step on first base to beat Megan
Shinaberry to the bag to record the
final out.
Burnham entered with the league lead in RBIs (39), runs
scored (36) and slugging percentage (.688) and went 3-for-3 off Galati. But the
right-hander limited the slugger to three singles, including an infield hit,
and prevented Burnham from advancing to second as the rest of JMU's lineup went
a combined 1-for-20. In the second game Galati retired Burnham on a ground out and a fly out to center.
Senior catcher
Courtney Crews came into the weekend leading the nation in hit-by-pitch
per game average and was plunked for the 22nd time this season in the second
inning of the first game.
Hofstra is now 31-1 against the CAA in regular season play
since 2011.
