MSOC: Hofstra Advances Past Mason On Penalty Kicks

Hempstead, N.Y. -  Five Hofstra players scored on their penalty kick attempts while senior goalkeeper Adam Janowski made a diving save on George Mason's first PK shot as the Pride advanced past the Patriots, 0-0 (5-3) in a shootout in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship quarterfinals on Monday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Fourth-seeded Hofstra moved to 11-5-3 and advanced to face top-seeded Drexel on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the CAA Championship semifinals. Second-seeded Northeastern will oppose third-seeded James Madison in the first semifinal matchup at 5 p.m. George Mason ended its season at 11-6-2.

Joseph Holland, Mike Annarumma, Maid Memic, Herbert Biste and Chris Griebsch all scored for Hofstra in the shootout. After Holland scored to the left to start penalty kick phase, Janowski gave Hofstra a huge lift when he made a diving save on Taylor Morgan's opening attempt. That proved to be the only stop by either team in the shootout, allowing Hofstra to advance.

George Mason goalkeeper Dustin Butcher made seven saves in playing all 110 minutes in regulation and double overtime. But the Patriots inserted keeper Alec Constantine for the shootout.

Griebsch, a junior, posted a game-high six shots and scored the game-ending goal as the fifth shooter in the penalty kick portion when he beat Constantine to the left side. His goal set off an on-field celebration and capped Hofstra's first penalty kick contest since the 2006 squad captured the CAA championship over George Mason on kicks, 3-2.

Like Butcher, Janowski also got credit for a clean sheet, making five saves, including three in the second half and one in double overtime. Janowski notched his five shutout of the season (and the fifth in his last eight games).

Hofstra recorded three shots in the first overtime period, including a great chance when Griebsch took Memic's pass and fired a hard shot to the top right corner. Butcher got his hand on the attempt, knocking it away in the 94th minute to keep the game tied.

The Pride will now face a Drexel squad that went 12-3-2 overall and 8-1-1 in CAA play. Hofstra lost to the Dragons, 2-1, at home in the previous meeting between the schools this season.
