Norfolk, VA - The
Hofstra Pride Men's Tennis team ended its 2010-11 season Thursday with a 4-0
loss to the Delaware Blue Hens in the first round of the Virginia 529 College
Savings Plan CAA Men's Tennis Championships at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center
on the campus of Old Dominion University. Hofstra ends its season with a 5-14
record.
Starting with doubles, the Pride got off to a promising start when Hofstra's Jon Disley and
Ben Thompson-Star
opened with an 8-5 victory over Ryan Kent and
Robby Kay in number three doubles. But the Blue Hens responded with an 8-3
victory by Chris Hincker and Courtney Scott over the Pride's
Antonio Pena
and
Matthew Gemmell
at second doubles, and an 8-4 win by Troy Beneck and Andre
Vorobyov over
Chris Damion
and
Adrien Bailly
at first doubles to capture the
doubles point.
In the singles competition, Hofstra was 1-1 in sets against Delaware in three
matches but the Blue Hens won the other three matches in straight sets to
capture the match. Delaware"s Jeff Marshall gave the Blue Hens a 2-0 lead with
a 6-2, 6-1 win over
Matthew Gemmell
at fifth singles. Troy Beneck downed Chris Damion, 6-2, 6-0 at second singles and Courtney Scott defeated
Antonio Pena
,
6-1, 6-2 at first singles to post the 4-0 victory.
Hofstra's
Ben Thompson-Star
was tied at 1-1 in sets against Andre Vorobyov at
third singles,
Jon Disley
was 1-1 against Delaware's Chris Hincker at fourth
singles and
Adrien Bailly
was 1-1 against Ryan Kent at sixth singles when the
match ended.
