2/24/2011 2:14:00 AM

Wilmington, N.C. - Senior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, N.Y.) had 22 points and sophomore forward David Imes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added a double-double with 12 points and a career-high tying 17 rebounds as Hofstra earned a 71-64 road win over UNC Wilmington on Wednesday evening at Trask Coliseum.

With the win, Hofstra improves to 19-10 overall and 13-4 in the CAA, and moves ahead of VCU, which lost at Drexel. With a win over Delaware on Saturday, the Pride will finish with no worse than the third seed, and could even finish with the second seed if Old Dominion loses one of its final two contests. UNC Wilmington slips to 13-16 overall and 7-10 in the CAA. The Pride, which also got 20 points from junior guard Mike Moore (New Haven, Conn.), won its seventh straight in the series with the Seahawks.

Hofstra went into the locker room tied at 30-30 and slowly built up a lead, as Moore and Jenkins hit three-pointers on successive possessions to put the Pride ahead 55-47 with 9:20 to go. Tomko, though, responded with seven points and an assist in a span of less than three minutes to get the Seahawks back to 55-54 with 6:52 left.

A lay-up from UNC Wilmington's Keith Rendelman tied the score at 56-56, and sophomore guard Yves Jules (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and UNC Wilmington senior guard Darryl Felder exchanged threes to tie the game at 59-59. Imes then scored on a put-back, and Jenkins found Moore for a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to make it 64-59 with 1:47 left. Rendelman hit a lay-up to close to 64-61, but UNC Wilmington missed two shots in close and four foul shots in the final minute, and Hofstra was able to hang on for the win.

The first half was evenly-played as the teams went into the locker room tied 30-30. Jenkins and Tomko each had 14 in the first half on strong shooting, as Jenkins was 6-8 from the floor, while Tomko was 5-8 and added seven defensive rebounds in the first 20 minutes. UNC Wilmington led by as many as five (18-13) on a long three-pointer from Tomko, but Jenkins scored seven straight points, including a long three-pointer of his own, to put the Pride ahead 24-23. Moore capped off the half with a three-point play with 1:06 left to even the score at 30-30.

Tomko had a spectacular all-around performance for UNC Wilmington on his Senior Day, tallying 21 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists in a losing cause, while Rendelman had 20 and Felder had 13.

Hofstra will next be in action when it concludes the regular season with a home game against Delaware on Saturday at 2 p.m. It will also be Senior Day, as Hofstra will honor Jenkins, senior forward Greg Washington (Centereach, N.Y.) and senior guard Brad Kelleher (Victoria, Australia) in a ceremony beginning at 1:40 p.m. Hofstra will also retire Jenkins' jersey number (#22) at the conclusion of the ceremony.
