WCC: Pride To Compete in the Metropolitan Championships Friday

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra Pride Women's Cross Country team returns to action on Friday, October 7 when they compete in the Metropolitan Conference Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The women's 5K race begins at 2 p.m.


The Pride women had split squad competition three weeks ago. Hofstra seniors Meghan McCloskey and Brittany Rose each placed in the top 90 to lead the Hofstra Women's Cross Country team to a 17th-place finish at the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park three weeks ago.  McCloskey (Brewer, ME) posted a 6K time of 25:01 to place 82nd. Rose, a native of Peru, New York who returned to the Pride team for the first time since her freshman season, placed 87th in 25:09. Sophomore Kristin Mathis (Williamstown, NJ) placed third on the Pride squad, coming in 105th in 25:31. Senior Kelly Lutz (Catonsville, MD) finished 117th in 25:55 while freshman Eva Holterman (Staten Island, NY) was 119th in 26:00 to round out the scoring members of the Pride. Junior Cara Mattson (East Meadow, NY) placed 124th in 26:29 and sophomore Brittney Towner (Rocky River, OH) was 129th in 27:16 to close out the Pride place holders. Sophomore Liz Jerome (Northport, NY) was 186th in 27:26 and senior Katie Wiking (Farmingdale, NY) was 189th in 28:06 to round out the Hofstra runners in the meet.

A day later, Hofstra ran in tri-duals at the 5K NJIT Classic at Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey. Sophomore Jacklyn McKnight (North Massapequa, NY) placed 13th in 21:19 and senior Rebecca Soehner (Rockville Centre, NY) was 17th in 21:57 to lead the Pride to a 1-2 mark on the day. Sophomore Teresamarie Governale (Whitestone, NY) was 22nd in 23:24, senior Ludnie Faustin (Huntington Station, NY) was 26th in 24:24, senior Rachelle Fabre (North Babylon, NY) was 30th in 25:20 while senior Rebecca Salentino (Glen Cove, NY) was 31st in 25:26. The Pride defeated  Long Island University,  27-29, but lost to NJIT, 15-50, and St. Peter's, 22-35.


This year's women's Metropolitan Championship is the fourth for the Pride women after placing eighth in 2008 and ninth in both 2009 and 2010. In last year's Met, the Pride women were led by Kristin Mathis, who placed 25th in the 5K race in 19:44. Meghan McCloskey was 38th in 20:21and Cara Mattson was 57th in 20:58. Brittany Potter was 72nd in 21:31, and Elizabeth Jerome was 69th in 21:35 to round out the scoring runners. Other Hofstra runners who competed included Brittany Towner, who placed 72nd in 21:43; Kelly Lutz, who finished 74th in 21:49; Teresamarie Governale, who placed 95th in 21:58; Kirstin Kaija, who clocked a time of 22:48 to place 118th; and Katie Wiking, who was 122nd in 23:10.
