HOFSTRA POSTS SECOND STRAIGHT DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OVER FAIRFIELD

3/21/2010 11:00:00 PM

Hempstead, NY--Senior Ethan Paquette hit a grand slam home run in the opener and junior Scott A'Hara drilled two home runs in the second game to lead Hofstra to a doubleheader sweep over Fairfield, 11-0 and 12-11, on Sunday afternoon at University Field.

Senior Matt Prokopowicz (Massapequa, NY) scored five runs total and went 5-for-8 with two RBIs combined as the Pride posted wins in both ends of a doubleheader for a second consecutive day against the Stags. Hofstra improved to 4-10 overall while Fairfield dropped to 6-8.

The Pride registered its first four-game winning streak since Feb. 24-March 3, 2007 when it swept a three-game series from Coppin State and beat Saint Peter's. Hofstra also swept consecutive doubleheaders against the same opponent for the first time since beating Hartford four straight times in 2001.

Junior Sean Monaghan (East Meadow, NY) limited Fairfield to three hits in four innings, qualifying for the win in the seven-inning opener. Monaghan (1-2) walked two and struck out three for his first win as a member of Hofstra.

Prokopowicz's third-inning double opened the scoring before Hofstra posted four runs in the fifth to give the bullpen a cushion. Junior Kevin Flynn (Morristown, NJ) delivered a two-run double against reliever Kyle Goldstein to make it 6-0.

Senior Mike Walraven (Thompson Ridge, NY) added a RBI single the next inning. Fairfield called on Justin Servino to escape a bases-loaded jam without further damage in the sixth. But Paquette (West Burke, VT) greeted the senior right-hander by pulling a pitch down the leftfield line for the grand slam and his third home run of the season.

Fairfield starter Rob Gariano allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits in four innings, falling to 0-1. Andrew Barbarino, Jeff Guthridge and Gregg Sarra each logged a scoreless inning in relief to preserve Hofstra's first shutout of 2010. The Pride accomplished that feat once in 2009, blanking William and Mary on May 16.

Hofstra's offense continued its week-long proficiency in the second game, belting out 12 runs on 16 hits. The Pride totaled 45 runs in the four-game set.

A'Hara (Downingtown, PA) entered the contest with one career home run before hitting two in a single contest, capping a 2-for-4, 4-RBI afternoon.

Hofstra raced to a 2-0 first-inning lead in Game 2 off starter Scott Warwick (0-2). A'Hara then added a power stroke from the lineup's ninth spot, pulling a two-run home run home run to right to ignite a four-run inning.

Walraven followed with his own two-run home run later in the inning, starting a 4-for-5, three-RBI effort for the third baseman.

Marco Garamella led a Fairfield comeback attempt after entering a pinch hitter for Ryan Furbeck in the second inning. Garamella drove in five runs on two hits and scored a run. His first hit was a two-run single in the second to ignite a three-run Fairfield inning.

Hofstra used six pitchers to close the game out. After junior starter Kevin Rigopoulos (Athol, MA) was knocked out after two innings, Drew Liebert recorded the next five outs. Freshman Cody Normand (North Kingstown, RI) did the best job of any Pride pitcher in the back-end game,  holding Fairfield to just one hit in 2 1/3 innings to pick up his first collegiate win in moving to 1-1.

The Pride closes out a six-game homestand with a Wednesday afternoon contest versus Manhattan. Game time at University Field is set for 3 p.m.
