HOFSTRA FALLS TO VCU IN POSTSEASON WNIT SECOND ROUND

3/21/2010 9:00:00 PM

Richmond, VA - Senior guard Sam Brigham had 17 points, including the 1,000th of her career, while senior center Jess Fuller had eight points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots, but it was not enough as the Hofstra Women's Basketball team fell to VCU, 84-65, in the second round of the Postseason WNIT on Sunday afternoon at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Hofstra sees its record fall to 20-14 with the loss.  The Pride, which finished the season 9-4 since February 1, won 20 games in a season for the third time in the program's Division I history.

VCU moves on to the third round with the win, which improved its record to 22-12 this year.

This season's appearance in the Postseason WNIT marked the third time in Hofstra's Division I history that the Pride has made a postseason appearance after qualifying for the WNIT in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

Brigham was a huge bright spot in the first half as the Simsbury, CT native became just the 20th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points with a three-pointer at the 15:03 mark.

Brigham finished her career with 1,016 points, while also tallying 129 three-pointers.  Her points total is 19th all-time and her three-pointers rank sixth all-time in program history.

Fuller, who had four blocks in the opening half and ended the game with six, finished her career with 208 blocks, tops in program history.  Her 103 blocks this season are the new single-season school record and she is just the second player in CAA history to record at least 100 blocks in a single season, following Amy Dorsett of Richmond who blocked 110 shots during the 1996-97 campaign.

It was all VCU in the opening twenty minutes as the Rams scored 10 of the first 12 points in the game and never looked back in building a 50-22 halftime advantage.  Courtney Hurt and Kita Waller led the first half charge for the Rams as they each tallied 19 points in the half, as VCU shot a stellar 61.8% (21-34) from the field.

Trailing 29-13 at the 9:58 mark, Hofstra did rally back to cut the deficit to 11, 31-20, after a layup from Fuller with 4:25 to play but that would be as close as the Pride would get in the opening half.

Hofstra never seriously challenged in the second half as the Pride saw its season come to an end in the second round of the WNIT.

Hurt and Waller each finished with 27 points apiece for the Rams.

VCU moves on to face the winner of the Syracuse/Richmond game.
