Fairfax, VA -- Senior first baseman Adam Perlo went 2-4 with two RBIs and Hofstra out-hit George Mason, but it wasn't enough as the Pride dropped a 9-5 decision to the first-place Patriots in a CAA matchup Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Junior Matt Prokopowicz also logged a multi-RBI game, driving in two in a 3-5 showing. Hofstra still couldn't avoid the three-game sweep, losing its seventh straight in falling to 6-27 overall and 2-16 versus the CAA. Mark Hill drove in three Patriots runs, helping George Mason improve to 34-8 and 14-4 in conference play.
Prokopowicz put Hofstra on the scoreboard in the first, singling to left on the first pitch to score senior Tom Legregni. George Mason responded in the bottom of the first on Chris Henderson's solo home run off sophomore starter Kevin Rigopoulos. Henderson's blast marked the start of a great day at the plate, as the catcher went 4-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
George Mason scored in the second and third to go ahead 3-1 thanks to Hill's run-scoring single. After Justin Bour singled home a run in the third, Rigopoulos would settle down, not allowing any more more runs in five innings of work in which he held the potent Patriots to just six hits. Rigopoulos still fell to 1-3.
Hofstra chipped into the lead with a run in the fifth and three runs in the eighth. Perlo ripped a two-run single up the middle and senior rightfielder Mark Stuckless added a sacrifice fly.
George Mason prevented any thoughts of comeback in the sixth, thanks to Hill's two-run single against the Hofstra bullpen to put the game away. Patriots starter Kris Mengle improved to 3-0, allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings on seven hits.
Hofstra will conclude a stretch of seven straight road games with a contest against New York Tech Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
