Fairfax, VA -- George Mason's Mike Modica tossed a complete-game four-hitter and Chris Henderson went 4-5 with two RBIs as Hofstra fell, 10-3, to the first-place Patriots on a scorching Saturday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Senior rightfielder Mark Stuckless continued to provide a bright spot for the Pride, factoring into every Hofstra run with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. But it wasn't enough as a six-game losing streak dropped Hofstra to 6-26 overall and 2-15 against the CAA. Justin Bour contributed two RBIs in a 13-hit George Mason output, improving the Patriots to 33-8 overall and 13-4 in the conference.
Stuckless put the Pride ahead in the first, lining a single up the middle and advanced to second on a bunt single. Junior outfielder John Kenny reached on a fielding error, plating Stuckless to open the scoring. Modica walked a batter following a flyout, loading the bases.
But the lefthander escaped trouble by striking out the next two batters. George Mason's offense took advantage of Modica's effectiveness, tying the contest in the bottom of the first via Scott Krieger's solo home run to left. The Patriots opened the floodgates with a four-run second, working three hits against Pride senior starter Brody Fontaine.
Two sacrifice flies and Henderson's RBI single put George Mason up, 5-1. The Patriots tacked on single runs in the third, fourth and fifth, finally chasing Fontaine (0-8) after the lefty gave up eight runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Stuckless gave the Pride a chance to make a comeback, pulling Modica's pitch to right for a two-run home run in the fifth in 90-degree weather. It was Stuckless' team-leading fourth homer this season, though Hofstra would muster just one more base hit after the long ball. Modica improved to 8-1.
Hofstra concludes its three-game set with the series finale Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m.
