PRIDE FALL TO OLD DOMINION 9-3

4/18/2009 8:15:00 PM

Norfolk, VA - Hofstra built a three-run lead for a second straight game, though Old Dominion once again was able to finish a come-from-behind victory, posting a 9-3 win over the Pride at Bud Metheny Complex Saturday afternoon.

Old Dominion saw its starter log the complete game victory for a second straight game, with Brady Burchill (3-2) allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits in the CAA matchup as ODU improved to 14-20 and 7-7 against the conference. Sophomore Scott A'Hara lined a two-run single in the first but it wasn't enough as Hofstra fell to 6-23 and 2-12 versus the CAA.

The Monarchs erased a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two-spots in the fourth and fifth Josh Wright went 2-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the fourth against Pride starter Rob Kumbatovic.

Kumbatovic, a junior, allowed five runs (four earned) in five innings in dropping to 3-5. The Pride supported the right-hander by scoring three runs in the first, a feat the team also accomplished on Friday. Three walks presented a two-out, bases-loaded situation for A'Hara, who delivered with a two-RBI base hit. Junior outfielder John Kenny came in for the third run on the next play thanks to an error on the catcher.

Burchill would settle down after that, not allowing another run in striking out five. The Monarchs got on the scoreboard in the second, with Cameron Scott driving in Wright via a RBI single. ODU's offense completed the comeback in the third, with Wright following an inning-opening walk by blasting a two-run shot to left.

The Monarchs took the lead an inning later. A fielding error at third base allowed the leadoff runner to reach and a single put two runners on base. Harris and Wright followed with back-to-back RBI singles, giving ODU the lead for good. The Monarchs tacked on three runs in the eighth to provide Burchill with three insurance runs, allowing him to go the distance.

Hofstra will look to avoid the sweep when the three game series concludes Sunday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
