Norfolk, VA - Hofstra jumped out to a three-run first inning lead before
Old Dominion capped a comeback for a 13-5 victory over the Pride in a CAA
matchup Friday night.
Senior shortstop Chris Mentrasti went 3-5 and two runs
scored and John Kenny registered two RBIs, though Hofstra still dropped to 6-22
overall and 2-11 in conference play. Brett Harris (4-3) earned the complete game
win for ODU, while going 4-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs as a batter to
help ODU improve to 13-20 and 6-7 against the CAA.
Kenny, a senior outfielder, lined a run-scoring single to
center and junior Matt Prokopowicz added a RBI ground-out as Hofstra put up a
three-spot in the first inning. But senior Brody Fontaine (0-7) ran into trouble
in the fifth, when the Monarchs scored four runs to go ahead 8-4 and maintain
control for the victory.
Josh Right recorded three RBIs and Chris Boss added two for
the Monarchs. ODU sustained a one-out rally in the fifth, breaking a 4-all tie.
After a strikeout, back-to-back walks set up Harris' RBI single to right field.
Following an intentional walk to help set up the double play, a fielding error
at shortstop allowed two runs to score, making it 7-5 in chasing
Fontaine.
Senior Bobby Neelon came on in relief and gave up a RBI
single to Cameron Scott. But Neelon settled down and struck out the next two
batters to minimize the damage. Hofstra cut it to 8-5 in the eighth via Kenny's
second RBI hit of the evening, plating fellow senior Tom Legregni with a RBI
single to center.
ODU scored five tack-on runs in the bottom of the inning,
negating any comeback hopes. The two teams will meet again Saturday in the
middle game of a three-game set. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
