Sixth-seeded Delaware, #7 Drexel and #8 James Madison posted victories in the first round of the CAA Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday at Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University
Delaware defeated #11 George Mason, 4-0, Drexel downed #10 Hofstra, 4-0 and JMU beat #9 Towson, 5-0 to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday. Matches were played indoors due to high winds, so singles matches were contested first.
Delaware captured all four of its single matches in impressive fashion. The closest contest was at number one where the Blue Hens' Elena Berry got by Mason's Lindsay Gray, 6-4, 6-3. UD lost just four total games in its other three victories. The Hens' Megan Doran beat Brooke Blackwell, 6-1, 6-1 at number two, Ivana Petrich downed Alicia Van Zandt, 6-1, 6-0 at number three and Amanda Campbell clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Meredith Cutchin at number five.
Drexel rolled to victories in three singles matches and won a fourth by forfeit. The Dragons' Gorde Unkaya beat Hofstra's Christie Gattelaro, 6-0, 6-1 at number two, Drexel's Anahita Jagtiani topped Stacy Kent, 6-4, 6-4 at number three and Sonja Stosic defeated the Pride's Brooke Sailer, 6-2, 6-1 at number four. The Dragons also earned a win at number six as Emily Lewis won by forfeit.
Hofstra ends its season with a record of 9-11.
JMU swept all five of its singles matches in straight sets. At number one singles, the Dukes' Kinsey Pate rolled past the Tigers' Lauren Cloonan, 6-1, 6-1, while JMU's Rebecca Erickson posted a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Aandria Carr at number two. Kristin Nimitz recorded a 6-0, 7-6 triumph over Evelyn Izaguirre at number three, and Anna Khoor outlasted Katie Young, 7-6, 7-6 at number four. At number five, JMU's Leah DeMasters blanked Ashley Peretz, 6-0, 6-0.
In Friday's quarterfinals, #4 Old Dominion faces #5 UNC Wilmington at 9 a.m., #1 Georgia State meets #8 James Madison at 11:30 a.m., #2 VCU takes on #7 Drexel at 2 p.m. and #3 William & Mary challenges #6 Delaware at 3:30 p.m.
