PRIDE WINS FIRST CONFERENCE GAME IN EXTRA INNINGS

3/28/2009 6:15:00 PM

Hempstead, NY -- Seniors Mark Stuckless and Tom Legregni each laced consecutive two-out RBI singles in bottom of the 10th inning to propel Hofstra to a 5-4 victory over Northeastern at University Field for its first conference win of the season.

After the Huskies pulled ahead by one in the top of the 10th, Stuckless (Kanata, Ontario) pulled a single to rightfield to score Scott A'Hara (Downingtown, Pa) with the tying run. Stuckless advanced to second on the throw home and moved up 90 feet on a throwing error. Legregni (Paramus, NJ) followed that dramatic play by connecting on a two-strike offering, lifting the pitch to centerfield to plate Stuckless with the winning run.

Hofstra improved to 3-15 overall and 1-5 against the CAA in snapping a three-game losing streak. Jeff Guthridge (Bel Air, MD) picked up the win, improving to 2-1 by providing 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen. Northeastern, which won the first two games of the series, fell to 12-8 and 3-3 in conference play.

Senior second baseman Chris Mentrasti gave Hofstra the lead in the first, ripping the first of his two RBI singles to score Stuckless and give the Pride an early 1-0 lead. Northeastern countered with two runs in the second thanks to RBI singles from Sam Berg and Matt Miller.

But Hofstra starter Nick Panzarella (Three Bridges, NJ) settled down after that, allowing just three runs on five hits in six innings for the quality start in his most efficient outing of the season.

Adam Perlo (Fairport, NY) supported Panzarella with a run-scoring double while Mentrasti picked up his second RBI with a single to right in a two-run third inning. Northeastern tied it at 3 in the top of the fourth when James Donaldson belted a solo home run to left.

Both schools exchanged five scoreless innings, thanks to Guthridge's appearance out of the bullpen. The right-hander entered a two-out situation with runners on first and second and forced a ground out to end Northeastern's burgeoning rally in the seventh. After giving up a leadoff double in the eighth, Guthridge retired the next six batters, giving Hofstra the chance to win it in the ninth.

The Pride moved the potential winning run within 90 feet of home plate when Stuckless started the inning with a single off Drew Leenhouts and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Stuckless moved up to third on a wild pitch and after a walk to John Kenny, the Huskies turned to Russ Lloyd, who promptly induced Mentrasti to pop up to first with runners on the corners and one out.

Lloyd then walked the next batter intentionally to load the bases for Perlo. The right-hander forced Perlo to hit a pitch high down the rightfield line, where first baseman Brendan Stokes made a sliding grab in foul territory to send the game into extra innings.

Northeastern jumped ahead in the 10th thanks to a balk call. Leadoff hitter Matt Miller started the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Guthridge intentionally walked the next batter to set up the double play before getting a strikeout. After a walk loaded the bases, Guthridge dropped the ball on the mound, advancing all three runners while scoring Miller for the go-ahead run.

Lloyd started the 10th and promptly gave up a leadoff single to A'Hara and he moved to second on a sac bunt. Lloyd bounced back to get the strikeout before giving way to Dan Zehr (2-1). Zehr gave up the back-to-back hits that ended the game.

In the first inning, Mike Tamsin's single to center field moved him into first place on Northeastern's all-time hits list. Hofstra will next be in action Tuesday when it hosts Manhattan. First pitch at University Field is set for 3 p.m.
