Hempstead, NY --
Senior lefthander Brody Fontaine turned in
his best effort of the season in the opener of Friday afternoon's doubleheader
against Northeastern, but it wasn't enough as the Pride fell in both games, 1-0
and 14-3, to the Huskies at University Field.
Hofstra limited CAA-rival Northeastern to
just three hits in the opener before the Huskies tagged five home runs,
including two by Mike Tamsin, in Game 2 to help Northeastern (12-7, 3-2) sweep
the twin-bill. The Pride dropped to 2-15 and 0-5 against the conference. The
finale of the three-game series is Saturday with a new start time. First pitch
is scheduled for noon.
Fontaine (Amenia, NY)
held Northeastern to just three hits in seven innings in Game 1. But James
Donaldson's second-inning solo home run marked the only scoring of the game as
Fontaine fell to 0-4 despite allowing just eight base runners in his longest
outing of 2009. Ryan Quigley was also sharp, holding Hofstra to seven hits in
eight scoreless innings in improving to 2-2.
The Pride brought the potential winning run
to the plate in the ninth when freshman Chris Greco (Totawa, NJ) lined a one-out single to right field to
chase reliever Russ Lloyd. Northeastern called on freshman Drew Leenhouts, who
watched his teammates catch Greco trying to steal second before the southpaw
recorded a strikeout to end the game, picking up his second save.
Northeastern's offense picked up in the
second game, led by Tamsin's solo home run to right in the first. The third
baseman repeated the feat in the third inning with a three-run shot off Rob Kumbatovic that cleared the rightfield fence to complete his four-RBI
game.
Kumbatovic (Hillsborough, NJ) pitched five innings, brining his innings
pitched total to a team-high 34 1/3. The junior right-hander fell to 1-4 while
Jeff Thomson took advantage of the run support, pitching six scoreless innings
for the Huskies in improving to 2-3.
Donaldson added a solo home run to start a
five-run sixth inning that put the game away. Brendan Stokes and Sam Berg added
homers as well for the Huskies.
Hofstra's bats awoke in the seventh when
Scott A'Hara (Downingtown, PA) smacked a RBI single to score Adam Perlo (Fairport, NY) for the Pride's first run. Greco added an
RBI single and fellow freshman Mikhal Polan (Mineola, NY)
added the Pride's final run off a wild pitch.
