HOFSTRA DROPS BOTH ENDS OF DOUBLEHEADER TO VERMONT

3/21/2009 6:30:00 PM

Hempstead, NY -- Brad Currier hit a grand slam home run in the first game and Joe Serafin threw a complete game in the back-end of a twin-bill as Hofstra lost both games of a doubleheader, 17-5 and 11-3, against Vermont Saturday afternoon at University Field.

Senior Mark Stuckless (Kanata, Ontario) scored three combined runs in both games but it wasn't enough as the Pride fell to 1-11. Led by Matt Duffy's 8-10, six-run effort, Vermont trailed only once, picking up its first victories of the season in improving to 2-11.

Senior Adam Perlo (Fairport, NY) added a two-double in the third inning of the opener as the Pride took a 5-4 lead against Vermont starter Leif Sorenson. But the Catamounts countered with a seven-run fourth highlighted by Currier's grand slam to left-center field that landed in front of the Rec Center. Two batters later, Mike McCarthy hit the first of his pair of two-run home runs, lifting Bobby Neelon's (Needville, TX) offering over the centerfield wall.

McCarthy, who scored three runs in going 3-5 with 6 RBIs in Game 1, followed his fourth-inning blast with another two-run homer in the fifth, capping a four-run inning for the Catamounts. Pride senior starter Brody Fontaine (Amenia, NY) fell to 0-3, giving up eight runs (five earned) in three innings. McCarthy and Currier combined for 10 RBIs in the opener.

Vermont's hot hitting sustained itself to open Game 2. The Catamounts scored five first-inning runs, all coming with two outs. Sophomore starter Scott A'Hara (Dowingtown, PA) nearly escaped trouble but McCarthy beat out a potential double play ball. That kept the inning alive for Ethan Paquette, who lifted a two-run double to right-center. Tom Kelly followed with a RBI single to center and Jeff Nolet capped the inning with a two-run home run that sailed over the centerfield fence.

Serafin capitalized on the early 5-0 lead, pitching a complete game in the seven-inning contest. The left-hander gave up just seven hits and three runs (two earned) in improving to 1-3. A'Hara fell to 0-1 but settled down after a rocky first and gave the bullpen a rest, recording a strikeout in five innings.

Matt Duffy completed his stellar afternoon with a two home-run game. His first long ball was a two-run homer in the second that made it 7-1 and his three-run shot in the sixth off Kevin Rigopoulos (Athol, MA) gave him six runs scored and five RBIs on the day.

Hofstra will next in be action Sunday when it hosts Vermont for another noon doubleheader at University Field.  Like Saturday, both games are scheduled to be seven-inning contests. Junior Rob Kumbatovic (1-3), the probable Game 1 starter, will be looking to win his second start in a row after beating St. John's Wednesday. Senior left-hander Nick Panzarella (0-2) is expected to get the nod in the second game.
