Wilmington, NC --
Hofstra took a lead for a third
consecutive game against conference rival UNC Wilmington, but the Seahawks again
mounted a comeback in defeating the Pride, 11-8, Saturday afternoon at Brooks
Field.
Junior third baseman Matt Prokopowicz, senior shortstop Chris Mentrasti and junior catcher Elliot Hagburg
(pictured) each compiled two-RBI afternoons for the Pride. Hofstra still fell to
0-9 and 0-3 in CAA play. UNC Wilmington's Mike Rooney added a two-run single as
part of a five-run fifth inning, allowing the Seahawks to improve 14-2 in
sweeping the three-game series.
Hofstra started a two-out rally in
the fourth, getting back-to-back singles from seniors Adam Perlo and Nick Panzarella. Hagburg capitalized by lining a two-run single to right, bringing
Hofstra's edge to 3-0 following junior John Kenny's RBI single to center in the
third.
Seahawks starter Jesse Haney, who
surrendered the three runs, exited after 4 2/3 innings before qualifying for the
win. Senior starter Brody Fontaine got through the first three innings for
Hofstra before UNC Wilmington got on the scoreboard thanks to Robbie Monday's
solo home run. That marked the first of Monday's game-high three RBIs in a 2-4,
three-run, one walk effort.
Fontaine fell to 0-2, getting knocked
out in the fifth after giving up five runs on six hits and three walks in 4 2/3
innings. Fontaine gave up a leadoff double but induced two ground ball outs to
bring home a run but clear the bases. UNC Wilmington then followed a single with
two walks to load the bases as sophomore Scott A'Hara came on in relief. Rooney
greeted him with a base hit and Matt Holt laced a RBI single to make it
6-3.
Catcher David Shambley added a
two-run homer off A'Hara as part of the Seahawks three-run sixth inning. Junior
Dion Pouncil chipped into UNC Wilmington's edge, adding a run-scoring single in
the seventh after Mentrasti's sacrifice fly. Both runs came against Tyler Smith,
who still improved to 2-0 after pitching 2 1/3 innings in
relief.
UNC Wilmington added two key
insurance runs in the eighth to make it 11-5. Monday belted a two-run homer off
senior Bobby Neelon before Hofstra rallied for three runs in the ninth.
Prokopowicz ripped a two-run double to right-center and Mentrasti added a RBI
single before Stephen Harrold close out the victory.
Hofstra will now return to Hempstead
to start a season-high 10-game homestand starting Wednesday afternoon against
local rival St.
John's. The Pride's home opener is set for 3 p.m. at
University Field.
