Hempstead, NY -- After a 14-day respite, the Hofstra Baseball
team is set to take the field again when it opens Colonial Athletic Association
play with a three-game series against surging UNC Wilmington starting Friday at
3:30 p.m.
Hofstra's last game action was Feb. 27, when
it dropped both ends of a doubleheader to NC State. The Pride is looking for its
first win of the year against a Seahawks squad that won its first nine games of
the season and carries an 11-2 record into Brooks Field.
Inclement weather wiped out every single
contest of the Pride's scheduled six-game homestand. Hofstra returns to
North Carolina
looking to start the CAA portion of the schedule off on a high note. Head Coach
Patrick Anderson will go with three of his most experienced starters to round
out the rotation.
Senior left-hander Nick Panzarella will get
the ball in Game 1 followed by junior Rob Kumbatovic in Saturday's contest.
Kumbatovic, the staff ace, leads the team in innings pitched (13) and his ERA
4.85 is the lowest among the team's starters. Senior southpaw Brody Fontaine is
set to start in the series finale.
Offensively, senior rightfielder Mark Stuckless is looking to continue his hot hitting atop the Pride's lineup. His
team-high .400 batting average is 12th-best in the conference while senior
shortstop Chris Mentrasti is sixth in the CAA in on-base percentage with a .520
average. Mentrasti is also tied with Panzarella and junior Matt Prokopowicz for
the team lead with three RBIs. The bats will need to be hot to combat a UNC
Wilmington pitching staff that trails only Northeastern for the conference's
lowest collective ERA.
The Seahawks also boast a quality bullpen.
Tyler McSwain already has picked up three saves while freshman lefthander Steven
Davis picked up the CAA Rookie of the Week award after registering two saves.
Game time for Saturday is 4 p.m. while first pitch Sunday is set for 2
p.m.
