The 2008 Hofstra gridiron season kicks off on Wednesday, July 23 when the Colonial Athletic Association conducts its annual Football Media Day at the ESPN Zone at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland. WRHU-FM (88.7), the home for Hofstra sports, will air the event live. The broadcast, which will run from 10am-12:30pm, will include interviews with CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager, all 12 league head football coaches and selected student-athletes.
Among the student-athletes scheduled to attend the event are Hofstra seniors, quarterback Bryan Savage (Springfield, PA) and wide receiver Ottis Lewis (Norwalk, CT). Hofstra Pride football coach Dave Cohen will be interviewed in the 12:10 p.m. segment. WRHU Sports Director Mike Leslie will head up a team of broadcasters including Bob Bonette, Jon Lauder, Mitch Merman and Christian Heimall covering the event. WRHU is Long Island's oldest non-commercial radio station and reaches most of Long Island and New York City, as well as parts of Connecticut and New Jersey.
In addition to previewing the 2008 season, the 2008 Preseason All-CAA Football squad as well as the Preseason Players of the Year and predicted order of finish will be announced during the event. CAA Football, along with its television partners CN8 and Comcast SportsNet, also plans to release its 2008 Television Broadcast Schedule. This season's slate will again feature the largest number of broadcasts for any Football Championship Subdivision Conference in the country - topping the number of broadcasts announced prior to the 2007 season.
Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic plans to have a recap of CAA Football Media Day on its SportsNite program, July 23. CN8's "Out of Bounds" will also cover Media Day and air a special live one-hour CAA Football season preview hosted by Gregg Murphy on Wednesday, July 30 at 7 p.m. The "Out of Bounds" live show will feature an interview with Commissioner Yeager, as well as one-on-ones with various team coaches and players, some of which will be shot on location during the Media Day event.
The CAA is coming off a record-setting 2007 campaign. The conference had multiple teams receive NCAA FCS Championship bids for the 17th year in a row, extending the longest active league streak in the nation. In fact, a FCS Championship record five CAA members-the most from a single conference-participated in last year's playoffs.
CAA Football's 2008 regular season is set to kick off Aug. 28 when Hofstra travels to Connecticut and Northeastern takes on Ball State. The first CAA Football league contests of 2008 will take place Sept. 13. The Pride begin their CAA schedule on September 20 when they host Rhode Island at Shuart Stadium.
