DJORDJEVIC EARNS FIRST TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HONORS

6/13/2006 1:25:00 PM

Hofstra University senior tennis student-athlete Nikola Djordjevic (Belgrade, Serbia) was named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's At-Large first team today, it was announced jointly by ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A 2005 second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America; Djordjevic joins an impressive and short list of Hofstra student-athletes that have earned multiple Academic All-America accolades in their respective careers.  Previously, only Hilarie Cranmer (Women's Basketball; 1986 and 1987), Crystal Boyd (Softball; 1992, 1993 and 1994) and Arni Gunnarsson (Men's Soccer; 2002 and 2003) earned the honor on more than one occasion.

Djordjevic, a finance major who carries a 3.94 overall grade point average, finished off an impressive career this past spring.  Djordjevic compiled a 24-5 singles mark in 2005-06 to bring his career record to a spectacular 95-23.  This season he went 13-2 in duals at first singles and closed the season by winning nine straight matches and 11 of his last 12.  Three of Djordjevic's five losses this season were to nationally-ranked opponents.  Adding to his stellar final season, Djordjevic won the Cornell Fall Invitational, was the runner-up at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Newport News, advanced to the semifinals of the Northeast Intercollegiate and reached the round of 32 at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships.  In addition to his 24-5 singles record, Djordjevic teamed with his brother, Luka, for an 8-7 overall mark in doubles, including 6-5 at first doubles.

A 2006 All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) second team selection in singles and a third team honoree in doubles, Djordjevic also garnered CAA accolades in 2003 (Rookie of the Year), 2004 (second team) and 2005 (first team).

Academically speaking, Djordjevic was a 2004 ESPN The Magazine all-District pick in addition to last year's national honors and has been named the winner of the Hofstra University James M. Shuart award for three consecutive years (2004, 2005 and 2006).  The award is in recognition of outstanding achievement in academics and athletics.  A three-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award and a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete, Djordjevic was named the 2005 CAA Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
