Hofstra University alumnus Brandon Newton, who was a four-year letterman and a three-year starter for the Pride, signed a free agent contract yesterday with the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League.
Newton played in 41 games on the offensive line during his five-year (1999-2003) career with the Pride. After red-shirting in 1999, Newton played in six games in 2000 and 11 games in 2001 at guard and tackle. In 2002 he started all 12 games at right tackle. Last year, he anchored a young offensive line that featured three new starters and started all 12 games as a senior. He received the 38th annual Hofstra University Mayor's Trophy Award in 2003 for fair play and good sportsmanship both on and off the field.
A Lauderhill, Florida resident, Newton was an All-Broward County selection and an All-Florida honorable mention as a senior at Boyd Anderson High School in Fort Lauderdale.
