NEWARK, Delaware (Oct. 13) - Quarterback Rocky Butler completed 20 of 26 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns, including two to Charlie Adams, and Trevor Dimmie rushed for 123 yards to lead the ninth-ranked Pride of Hofstra (5-1, 5-1 in A-10) to a 39-14 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over the Blue Hens of Delaware (2-4, 2-3 in A-10) Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium. The victory is Hofstra's fourth consecutive win.
Hofstra, which hadn't defeated the Blue Hens in six games dating back to 1967, and had never knocked them off in Delaware, jumped on the home team early. On their first possession, the Flying Dutchmen went 76 yards in 10 plays capped by an 11-yard scoring run by Trevor Dimmie. The PAT kick was missed. It was Dimmie's third touchdown of the season. The big play in the drive was a 25-yard run off a reverse by receiver Charlie Adams that brought the ball to the Delaware 11-yard line.
Hofstra boosted the lead to 12-0 on their next possession after a Delaware turnover. Blue Hen running back Antawn Jenkins fumbled on UD's second play from scrimmage at his own 22, and Hofstra corner Patrick Dorvelus scooped up the ball and ran it back six yards to the UD 16. Four plays later, Dimmie scored his second touchdown of the game on a four-yard run. The two-point conversion pass failed and Hofstra had a 12-0 lead with 8:54 to play in the first quarter.
The score stayed that way until 2:40 into the second quarter when Hofstra quarterback Rocky Butler engineered an eight-play, 63-yard drive capped by a 5-yard pass from Butler to Tom Kemper. It was Kemper's second TD catch of the season. Joe Nolan booted the extra point and the Pride led 19-0.
Delaware got on the board midway through the period as Butter Pressey's nine-yard scoring run capped a nine play, 66-yard drive. Hofstra closed out the firsthalf scoring just 1:01 before the break as Butler hit Adams with a 45-yard touchdown pass to give the Pride a 26-7 lead at halftime. It was Adams' 8th touchdown catch of the year.
Butler tossed his 20th touchdown pass of the season on Hofstra's first possession of the second half. The Walter Payton Award candidate hit senior receiver Kahmal Roy with a 45-yard scoring pass to give the Pride a 32-7 lead.It was Roy's 11th touchdown reception of the season. Delaware closed the deficit to 32-14 late in the period as Butter Pressey ripped off a 52-yard rundown the Hofstra sideline for his second touchdown of the game and fourth of the season.
But Butler responded with a 16-yard scoring pass to Adams 2:11 into the fourthq uarter to end an 11-play, 80-yard drive. The big play in the drive was an 18-yard pass from Butler to Jeremy Cooper on a 3rd-and-15 play atthe Delaware 34-yard line. The touchdown, and the extra point by Chris Onorato, gave Hofstra a 39-14 lead and closed out the scoring.
Hofstra posted 481 yards on offense. Roy, who became the fifth player in Hofstra history to record 2,000 career receiving yards, posted his sixth consecutive 100-yard receiving game of the year with seven receptions for 102 yards, while Adams finished up with five catches for 93 yards. Roy and Adams are the top receiving tandem in I-AA. Dimmie, who missed two games with an ankle sprain, picked up his 123 yards on the ground on 25 carries. Senior linebacker Todd DeLamielleure led the Hofstra defensive charge with 10 tackles and two interceptions. Jason Howard tallied 12 tackles and Tyree Johnson posted 10 tackles.
The Blue Hens of Delaware, which had 312 of its 348 yards on the ground, were led by Butch Patrick with 123 yards on 16 carries while Pressey added 97 yards on 11 runs.
