WTEN: Pride Host Hofstra Invitational This Weekend

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra Women's Tennis team hosts the Hofstra Invitational beginning Friday afternoon at Noon at the Hofstra Outdoor Tennis Center. The four-team tournament features the Pride along with Colgate, Saint Peter's and Wagner.
 
Two rounds of singles play in the A and B brackets, as well as two rounds of doubles play will take place Friday. Saturday's slate will include the semifinals and finals in singles and doubles, as well as consolation bracket competition
 
The event marks the second competition of the season for the Pride, which opened the season last weekend at the Stony Brook Classic. Freshman Sarah Catherine Herndon went 2-2 at Stony Brook and advanced to the finals of the D Singles consolation bracket. Junior Giulia Leone and freshman Michelle Kaplan each won a singles match during the Stony Brook Classic as well, while the doubles team of senior Sarah Bowen and junior Carmen Pestano went 1-1.
 
The Hofstra Invitational A Singles bracket features four Pride players in Bowen, Leone, Pestano and Kaplan. Bowen will receive a round of 16 bye and play the winner of the Samantha Hodges (Wagner)/Katie Grant (Colgate) match in the quarterfinals. Leone will open lay in the round of 16 against Marina Rull Valvieso of Wagner, while Pestano will also play a member of the Seahawks in Rina Baynes. Kaplan will face Malieve Hedberg of Saint Peter's in her round of 16 match.
 
Herndon and Ria Shah will compete for the Pride in the B Singles bracket. Herndon will have a bye to the quarterfinal, where she will face either Madison Pautsch (Wagner) or Stephanie Falcon (Saint Peter's). Shah will meet Jenna Harris of Wagner in the round of 16.
 
The Pride will have three doubles teams in action this weekend, as Leone and Shah will face Wagner's Avika Sagwal and Valvieso in the round of 16. Bowen and Pestano will take on Nicole Szczech and Cheyenne Brown of Colgate in the round of 16, while Kaplan and Herndon received an opening round bye. The duo will take on the winner of the match between Colgate's Jennifer Ho and Lauren Hyland and Saint Peter's Elena Melian Puigventos and Claudia Hellman in the quarterfinals.
