Agents
As a student-athlete representing Hofstra University, you're viewed as a role model on campus and within the community. The actions of student-athletes may directly influence how people perceive his/her team, and the athletic department, as well as the University. Student-athletes are expected to conduct themselves in a way that brings respect to themselves, their teammates, their team, and Hofstra University, regardless of whether he/she is representing Hofstra University at a competition or he/she is involved in an activity having no relation to Hofstra University Athletics. Guide to a Career in Professional Athletics
Please remember, you will lose your eligibility IF:
1. You agree orally or in writing to be represented by an agent or any individual acting on behalf of the agent (e.g., runner).
2. You accept any benefits from an agent, a prospective agent or any individual acting on behalf of the agent (e.g., runner).
3. If you participate in a tryout with an NBA team that lasts longer than 48 hours, which you have not personally financed.
4. If you use an advisor throughout the process and do not pay the going rate for the advising services.
5. If you tryout with a professional team during the academic year and miss class.
6. If you enter the draft AND do not take the appropriate steps to withdraw and declare your intention to resume intercollegiate participation.
7. If you enter the draft AND are drafted by a professional team.
Employment
Compensation may be paid to a student-athlete:
- Only for work actually performed; and
- At a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services.
- Such compensation may not include any remuneration for value or utility that the student-athlete may have for the employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame or personal following that he or she has obtained because of athletics ability.
- A student-athlete may establish his or her own business, provided the student-athlete’s name, photograph, appearance or athletics reputation are not used to promote the business.
NCAA legislation does mandate that strict protocol be followed when the employment of a current student-athlete or prospective student-athlete becomes a possibility.

Student-athletes MUST consult and complete the appropriate paperwork with the Compliance Office prior to the initial date of employment.

Extra Benefits
An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or repreÂsentative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete family member or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their family members or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to the institution’s students or their family members or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g., international students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability.
Examples of impermissible extra benefits include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Cash or loans in any amount, or signing or cosigning for a loan
- Gifts of any kind, including birthday and holiday gifts
- Free or reduced-cost services such as car repairs, haircuts, tutoring, etc.
- The use of an automobile
- Free or reduced rent or housing
- Tickets to an athletic or community event
- Academic course supplies or assistance
- Arranging the employment of the relatives or friends of a student-athlete.
Examples of permissible benefits include:
- Hometown Award - A hometown group (other than the Hofstra University Pride Club) may pay reasonable and necessary expenses of a student-athlete returning home to receive an award for athletics accomplishments. The value of the hometown award cannot exceed $80.
- Transportation - It is permissible for a student-athlete to receive reasonable local transportation (within a 30-mile radius of campus) on an occasional basis from a Hofstra University employee.
