Shanahan earned the 2001 Tewaaraton Award, given to the top player in collegiate lacrosse. He was also named to the All-America first team and received the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award as the Division I Outstanding Lacrosse Player of the Year and the Lt. Donald McLaughlin Jr. Award as the top Division I midfielder.
 
Shanahan scored 95 goals and added 44 assists during his career, including 43 goals and 13 assists in 2001 when he led the Pride to the NCAA quarterfinals. He also won over 60 percent of his face-offs in his career and set a school record with 450 ground balls. After graduating, he went on to play for the United States National Team as well as professionally in Major League Lacrosse and the National Lacrosse League.
