Schmitt was a three-year starting offensive lineman for Hofstra from 1961-63, earning All-America honors as a senior. He was a member of Hofstra's 1962 team, which finished 8-2 and made the program's first ever postseason appearance in the Cement Bowl.

After leaving Hofstra, Schmitt enjoyed an 11-year career in the National Football League. He won a Super Bowl with the New York Jets in 1969, and was a two-time All-Pro selection. He was inaugural inductee into the Long Island Sports Hall of Fame and was also inducted into the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.
