Hempstead, NY -
Preston Edmead had 19 points and seven rebounds, while
Biggie Patterson tallied 16 points and nine rebounds and the Pride put together another stellar defensive effort as the Hofstra men's basketball team captured a 62-51 win over Drexel in the regular season finale on Tuesday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The win was Hofstra's fourth straight.
Hofstra finished the regular season with a 21-10 overall record and a 12-6 CAA mark. In addition to the four consecutive victories to end the regular season, the Pride has also won eight of its last nine games. Drexel dropped to 16-15 and 10-8 with the defeat.
Drexel had a 10-point lead late in the first half before two buckets from Patterson in the final minute, including one at the first half buzzer, closed the gap to six, 32-26, and gave the Pride some momentum heading into the second stanza.
With the Dragons leading 35-28 less than two minutes into the second half, Hofstra took control of the contest with their defense. The Pride would hold Drexel without a field goal from the 18:08 mark to the 9:40 mark of the second half and during that time use a 21-4 run to open up a 49-39 lead with 10:38 left.
Drexel closed the gap to eight shortly thereafter, but Hofstra showed its mettle and added a 13-4 run to take a commanding 62-45 lead with less than two minutes left.
Silas Sunday had five points and nine rebounds for Hofstra in his final game at the Mack Sports Complex.
German Plotnikov contributed six points on his senior day.
Shane Blakeney led Drexel with 15 points, VIctor Panov had nine points, and Kevon Vanderhorst added seven points and six assists.
Hofstra, the three seed, will open up play at the CAA Championship on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. when it takes on the winner of the second round match-up between sixth-seeded William & Mary and 11th-seeded Elon.
