Hofstra Suffers One-Goal Setback To St. John's

Farmingdale, NY - Brody Hergott's second goal of the game, with 1:56 on the clock, capped a three-goal run for St. John's, and proved to be the game-winner in the Red Storm's 9-8 victory over Hofstra Saturday at Rams Field on the campus of Farmingdale State College. The Pride had scored five consecutive goals spanning the third and fourth quarters to take an 8-6 lead with 7:57 to play. 

Hofstra dipped to 1-3 on the season with the loss, while the Red Storm improved to 2-2 after their second straight victory.

St. John's took a 6-3 lead seven seconds into the second half as Ethan Wiegand won the faceoff and scored. Neither team would score for the next 7:30 until Joey DeYoung ignited the Pride's five-goal run as he converted a pass from Anthony Mollica with 7:23 remaining in the quarter. DeYoung netted his second goal of the game from Trey Parkes with 3:54 to play in the third. Topher Accetta tied the game at 6 with an unassisted goal with 3:08 to go. Trevor Natalie gave the Pride their first lead of the game, 7-6, 3:46 into the fourth quarter and Mollica made it a two-goal game with 7:57 to play. 

The Red Storm cut it to a one-goal game with 3:56 on the clock on a Jake Wright man-up goal. Adrian Nowak tied the game with 2:39 showing before Hergott got the game-winner off a pass from Noah Plenn. Hofstra had a man-up opportunity for the final 23 seconds, but could not convert. Gus Langtry had the final shot for the Pride and hit the post with one second to go.

Matt Nelson made 10 saves for the Red Storm, while Hofstra keeper Shea Kennedy stopped 12 shots.

John Hicks, Natalie, and DeYoung each had two goals to lead the Pride. Wright and Hergott had two goals each for St. John's, while Plenn had a goal and two assists. 

Hofstra is back in action on February 28 at No. 19 Rutgers. Game time is set for 3 p.m.

Notes:
-Blake Cooling had a team-high five ground balls for Hofstra. 
-Nico Ghicas won three of his five face-offs.
-St. John's held a 38-37 shot advantage.  
-Hofstra leads the all-time series with St. John's, 21-7.
-Mollica extended his streak of consecutive games with an assist to 13.
