Griggs Homers Twice For Hofstra In Doubleheader At No. 4/6 Mississippi State

Starkville, MS - CJ Griggs homered in both ends of the doubleheader, but No. 4/6 Mississippi State picked up a pair wins Saturday to complete a series sweep at Dudy Noble Field. The Bulldogs posted a 6-1 win in the opener and then won the nightcap, 7-5. Hofstra is 0-3 on the season, while Mississippi State is 3-0.

Griggs hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning in game one to help the Pride avoid the shutout. His first inning home run in game two staked the Pride to a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs would roar back and take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second. Ace Reese hit a three-run home run in the inning to put Mississippi State on top.

Hofstra would load the bases in the fifth inning and walks to Tyler Castrataro and Griggs plated the tying and go-ahead runs as the Pride took a 5-4 lead. But Mississippi State rallied for three more runs in the bottom half of the fifth to take the lead for good. The tying run scored on an error and two more came in on a single from Chone James.

Hofstra would threaten in the ninth with the tying runs in scoring position, but Maddox Webb struck out the final two batters to end the threat and pick up his first save.

Jack Gleason (1-0), the fourth of six Bulldog pitchers, picked up the win in game two. Tanner Sanderoff (0-1) took the loss, allowing a pair of unearned runs on two hits over 2 â…“ innings.

Michael Brown was 2-3 with two runs scored in the nightcap, while Griggs had a career-best four RBIs.
