Hempstead, NY – A back-and-forth contest between the Hofstra women's basketball team and Towson was decided in the final seconds from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex as the Tigers came away with a 47-46 Coastal Athletic Association win over the Tigers.
Hofstra now sits at 3-11 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while Towson ups its record to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Nevaeh Brown finished with a game-high 17 points, her second consecutive game with at least 15 points, and she added three steals and a pair of rebounds. Meanwhile,
Alarice Gooden and
Sandra Magolico joined Brown in double-digit scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively, while Magolico recorded a game-high nine rebounds, and
Sana'a Garrett dished out four assists.
Despite scoring three points from two trips to the free throw line early in the first quarter, Hofstra struggled from the floor, shooting 0-10 before
Chloe Sterling sunk the Pride's first field goal at the 1:17 mark as the Pride trailed 13-5. A two-pointer by Towson's India Johnston made it a 15-5 score after one quarter of play. The Tigers' lead grew to 13 points in the second quarter after four straight points countered a layup and free throw by Gooden with 5:37 on the clock. After the media timeout at 4:45, Hofstra rallied for an eye-popping 13-0 run, headlined by a trio of three-pointers by Brown, including her final three as time expired to even the score at 21-21.
A jumper and free throw by Zoli Khalil put the guests ahead by three on the first possession of the third quarter before Magolico tied the game with a layup at 9:23 and a free throw at the 8:40 mark. Towson responded with a jumper on the ensuing possession, but Hofstra retook the lead for the first time since 7:52 of the first quarter on a jumper by Brown and a layup by Gooden, putting the Pride ahead by two at the 7:13 mark. Towson evened the score at 28-28 at 5:43 before Brown sunk a pair of free throws on Hofstra's next possession to re-establish the two-point lead. Tilda Sjökvist put the Tigers back in front with a three at 4:33, but Gooden answered back at the 2:15 mark with a driving layup to retake the lead. Micaela Carter in the face on an offensive rebound with six seconds remaining, ejecting her from the game and sending
Emma Von Essen to the line for a pair of free throws, which she sunk to put the lead at three points for the Pride heading into the fourth quarter.
Trailing 38-37 after Brown hit a pull-up jumper on the first Pride possession of the fourth quarter, Towson scored four straight points to lead by one before Hofstra retook the lead with a Brown layup. Magolico put the difference back at three points with a fast break layup at 5:26, but the lead was short lived as Towson rattled off six straight points over the span of a minute to pull ahead by three with 3:26 left in regulation. Garrett and Magolico both converted layups for the fourth lead change of the quarter, giving the Pride a slim one-point lead with under two minutes to play, before Towson tied the game on a free throw with 42 seconds on the clock. A Towson free throw following a Carter foul with 11 seconds on the clock put Towson ahead 47-46. Hofstra had the ball on the final possession of regulation, but the Pride couldn't get the final shot off before the buzzer sounded.
Johnston finished as Towson's leading scorer with 13 points.
Hofstra will travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for its next CAA contest against Drexel at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

-Hofstra held Towson to 3-19 (15.8%) from three-point range. The Tigers led the conference in three-pointers per game (8.2) and three-point percentage (35.0%) entering Friday's game.
-Hofstra forced Towson into committing 16 turnovers and tied a season-high with 10 steals set against UNCW.
