Hofstra Drops Doubleheader To UNCW

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra dropped both ends of a Coastal Athletic Association doubleheader to UNCW Friday at University Field. The Seahawks won game one, 12-4, and took game two, 9-2.

Hofstra slipped to 11-20 overall and 2-6 in the CAA with the losses. UNCW, the defending CAA champions, upped their mark to 16-15 overall and 4-4 in league play.

UNCW used a nine-run third inning to take control of the opener. The Seahawks sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning with Cole Nelson hitting a two-run home run and also driving in a third run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Ryker Galaska also had two RBIs in the inning.

Hofstra got three runs back in the fourth on sacrifice flies from Bryce Curry and Michael Brown, and an RBI double from Dylan Palmer. Tyler Castrataro would add another sac fly in the eighth to close out the Pride's scoring.

Palmer, Luke Masiuk, and Michael Craig each had two hits in the opener for the Pride. Neson finished 3-5 with two home runs and five RBIs for the Seahawks.

Zane Taylor (6-1) threw five innings to get the win, allowing three runs on six hits. Trace Baker pitched the final four frames for his fourth save. Sean Hamilton (0-1) took the loss for Hofstra after allowing five runs on two hits over 2 ⅓ innings.

In the nightcap, Hofstra took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and fourth innings before UNCW stormed back with three in the fifth, one in the sixth, and five in the ninth to complete the sweep.

Jake Harring, who was playing for the first time since February 28 at Kentucky, drove in both Hofstra runs. He had an RBI single in the second and a run-scoring ground out in the fourth.

In the UNCW fifth, the Seahawks put runners on first and second after a single and a hit batsman before Trevor Lucas cleared them with a home run to left to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. Tanner Thach added an RBI single in the sixth and then had a two-run double in the ninth.

Palmer finished with two hits in game two as well. Jackson Bauer (2-4) started and took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over 4 ⅔ innings.

Thach and Lucas each had three RBIs for UNCW. Starter Connor Marshburn (2-2) got the win, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings. Aubrey Smith pitched the final three innings to get his first save.

The series will conclude Saturday with an 11 a.m. start time.
