Stony Brook scored on an RBI single in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead before Hofstra responded with a four-run second inning. With the bases loaded after an infield single by
Mackenzie Fitzgerald, a walk to
Gemma D'Orazio, and a perfectly-placed bunt by
Nicole Cancel,
Lily Yepez evened the score with a bloop single to left field. After
Chelsea Villar reached base on a fielder's choice forceout at home,
Anna Butler drew a four-pitch walk to bring in the go-ahead run, and
Alanna Morse lined a single through the middle to plate Yepez and Cancel for the 4-1 lead.
Emma Falen pitched scoreless softball for the next three innings until Stony Brook loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Seawolves cut Hofstra's lead to one with a sacrifice fly and a single, and the hosts tied the game at 4-4 with a second sacrifice fly. With runners on second and third and no outs in the bottom of the sixth, Stony Brook retook the lead on the third sacrifice fly of the game, and they singled home another run on the next at-bat to make it 6-4.
Morse tallied two of Hofstra's seven hits in three plate appearances and drove in two RBIs. Falen went 4.1 innings and struck out four Stony Brook batters, while Butler took over for the final 1.2 innings.
The series continues from University Field on Saturday, April 26, at 2 p.m.
