Buies Creek, NC –
Alanna Morse went 3-3 at the plate on Sunday, but the Hofstra softball team ended its three-game series against Campbell with a 5-3 defeat from Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
Hofstra ends the weekend with an 8-21 overall record and a 5-7 mark in the CAA, and Campbell improves to 23-10 overall and 9-3 in league play.
All five of Campbell's runs came in the second inning behind two singles, a double, and a throwing error. The comeback began in the fifth inning when
Gemma D'Orazio led the inning off with a double to the outfield, and Morse followed this up with her second single of the afternoon to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Sophia Polzella snuck a dribbler through the gap between third base and shortstop to score D'Orazio, while
Nicole Cancel scored the second run of the inning on a ground rule double over the wall in right field, plating Morse from second to make it a three-run difference. Hofstra's third run of the frame came on a SAC fly by
Olivia Malinowski to right, allowing Polzella to tag up and dodge the tag by Campbell's catcher to score.
Unfortunately, Hofstra went down in order in the sixth inning, and the Pride couldn't capitalize on a leadoff single by Morse in the seventh inning before the final out.
Morse was responsible for three of Hofstra's eight runs on the day, while Dalhia Palacio went 2-3 at the plate, and Cancel, D'Orazio, and Polzella all tallied one hit apiece.
Emma Falen pitched four innings and struck out two Campbell batters, and
Carley Ernst pitched the last two innings in relief and recorded one punchout.
The Pride heads to Philadelphia for its next CAA series against Drexel, beginning on Friday, April 4, at 3 p.m.
