Hofstra Falls to Delaware in Series Finale

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra softball team ended its three-game series against Delaware with a 9-0 defeat in six innings from Bill Edwards Stadium on a picturesque Sunday afternoon on Long Island.

The loss snaps Hofstra's four-game winning streak and puts the Pride at 6-20 overall and 3-6 in the CAA, while Delaware moves to 18-10 overall and 7-2 in league play.

After a scoreless first inning, Delaware took the lead in the top of the second on a three-run home run by Chloe Blantz. Hofstra had an opportunity to put a run on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Chelsea Villar hit a lead-off double and advanced to third on a Delaware throwing error, but she was called out at home on a throw from second base.

Delaware plated another four runs in the fourth inning to make it a 7-0 score, and the Blue Hens capped off the game with a two-run home run by Sydney Shaffer to make it 9-0.

Villar and Mackenzie Fitzgerald tallied both of Hofstra's two hits against the Blue Hens, while the two and Sophia Polzella all reached base via walk. Anna Butler got the start in the circle in Sunday's game and struck out a Delaware batter in an inning of work. Carley Ernst pitched five innings of relief and recorded a season-high five strikeouts.

Despite the loss, Hofstra took two of three games from the Blue Hens for its first CAA series win of the season.

The Pride will embark on a seven-game road swing, beginning with a three-game series in Buies Creek, North Carolina against Campbell. The series against the Fighting Camels begins on Friday, March 29.

NOTES:
-Hofstra is now 70-31 against Delaware.
-Villar finished with a hit in all three games against Delaware, and she has gotten a hit in six of the last seven games.
