Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra softball team dropped the third and final game of its Coastal Athletic Association home series to Towson with a 4-2 loss on Sunday from Bill Edwards Stadium.
Hofstra is now 2-19 overall and 1-5 in the CAA, and Towson improves to 10-13 overall and 3-3 against conference competition.
Hofstra got off to a great start against the Tigers with a leadoff single for
Chelsea Villar, followed by an RBI double to right field by
Dahlia Palacio, scoring Villar all the way from first base to make it an early 1-0 Pride lead. After Palacio stole third with one out,
Alanna Morse drove a long fly ball out to center field, allowing Palacio to cross home safely for the 2-0 lead.
Emma Falen looked to be picking up where she left off after Friday's performance, pitching a pair of scoreless second and third innings, before Towson got on the board in the fourth inning on an RBI single with runners on second and third. The Tigers pulled ahead with a three-run sixth inning to lead the Pride by two. Taylor Broadbent sent a double to the outfield to tie the game at 2-2 with one out, and Alyssa Myint poked a single through the infield to clear the bases and give the visitors the lead.
Hofstra had an opportunity in the bottom half of the sixth inning as
Mackenzie Fitzgerald delivered a two-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but a drive to centerfield by Morse fell just short of going over the wall for the final out in the inning. Hofstra went down in order in the seventh inning to end the game and the series.
Hofstra finished the game with four hits against Towson, with Fitzgerald, Morse, Palacio, and Villar all reaching base safely in the game. Falen went the distance for Hofstra, pitching all seven innings and striking out five Towson batters.
Hofstra shifts focus to a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 18, at 10 a.m. against Howard. The Pride returns to Bill Edwards Stadium for a three-game series against Delaware beginning on Friday, March 21.
