Hofstra Drops Saturday Doubleheader in Waco

Waco, TX – On the second day of the Getterman Classic from Waco, Texas, the Hofstra softball team dropped both of its games against nationally-ranked Oklahoma and Baylor. The Pride were defeated 8-0 in five innings to #3 Oklahoma, and later fell in a thrilling 8-7 contest to #23 Baylor from Getterman Stadium.

Hofstra is now 0-3 on the season, while the Sooners improve to 7-0 and the Bears move to 5-3.
 
Game 1: #3 Oklahoma 8, Hofstra 0 (5 innings)
Ella Parker gave the Sooners a two-run lead in the first inning with a two-run home run, and Parker made it 4-0 to the four-time national champions with a one-out, RBI single to make it 3-0 in the second inning, and a fifth run crossed the plate on a fielder's choice play at first to make it 4-0 to the Sooners.
 
Oklahoma made it 5-0 with an RBI double by Aliana Agbayani in the third inning, and Sydney Barker plated a run with a triple to right, making it 6-0 for Oklahoma through three innings. Parker hit her second home run of the afternoon, a solo homer this time, to with one out in the fourth inning to make it 7-0, and the eighth and final run of the game came on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth.
 
Nicole Cancel, Tyler Douglas, and Alanna Morse all recorded hits against the Sooners in the game, and Emma Brennan and Haley Venturini combined for two saves in the game.
 
Game 2: #23 Baylor 8, Hofstra 7
After a scoreless first inning for the Pride and the Bears, Hofstra plated three runs in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. Nicole Cancel slapped a two-out RBI triple down the right field line, and Chelsea Villar crushed a two-run home run well over the left field wall. Baylor answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run single to make it a 3-2 scoreline.
 
Baylor changed the momentum of the game with a six-run fourth inning to take an 8-3 lead. With one out and the bases loaded, Brooklyn Carter blasted a double all the way to the centerfield wall to put the Bears on top, and they added another two runs on a double by Shaylon Govan to make it 6-3. The hosts scored runs on back-to-back doubles, putting the Bears on top by five.
 
After Hofstra and Baylor kept each other off the board in the fifth and sixth innings, Villar led off the inning with a single to right, followed by a double to left center by Dahlia Palacio to put runners on second and third with no outs, and Anna Butler loaded the bases when she reached base on a fielder's choice. Mackenzie Fitzgerald blooped the first pitch she saw into shallow right to bring the Pride within four. Gabby Sultan drew a five-pitch walk to score a run and make it 8-5, and after Olivia Malinowski popped to second base for the second out in the inning, Morse connected on a 2-1 pitch deep to right field, scoring Fitzgerald and Butler. Morse attempted to stretch her single to a double, but she was called out at second on the throw from right fielder Ashlyn Wachtendorf.
 
Villar went 2-2 at the plate with a single and a two-run home run while drawing a pair of walks, and Hofstra had two-hit games by Fitzgerald and Morse. Morse finished the game with two RBIs, while Fitzgerald, Sultan, and Cancel all drove in runs against the Bears. Carly Earnst got the first start of her college career and struck out three batters in 3.2 innings of work. Emma Falen and Haley Venturini also saw action in the circle for the Pride.
 
Hofstra closes out its stay in The Lone Star State on Sunday, February 16. The Pride will face Oklahoma at 11 a.m. (eastern), followed by a 1:30 p.m. (eastern) game against Baylor.
 
NOTES:
-Hofstra is now 1-2 all-time against Oklahoma and 1-3 all-time against Baylor.
-Villar's two RBIs tied her single-game high set against Drexel on March 17 and against Fordham on April 24.
-With two hits against the Bears, Palacio recorded the first multi-hit game of her career.
-Malinowski caught two Baylor base runners stealing.
